The Owl Zone - Ranger - 12-22-2016 01:37 PM

A number of us posted on the old Owl Zone (I think that is what it was called) and migrated here about ten years ago when the Owl Zone went defunct. Does any of the old timers know what happened to the OZ?

Many pages can be viewed on archive.org ... such as this forum message list ... although the posts themselves have apparently not been saved: https://web-beta.archive.org/web/20050306184948/http://www.owlzone.com:80/cgi-bin/webbbs/webbbs_config.pl

Fun looking through those topics and poster names... many of whom I recognize still posting here many years later...
FormerlyWarwickshireOwlNowJustAnotherAustinOwl
So that's where that name came from... The shorter version fits better..

Mike, I guess I meant, why did it become defunct. I never understood.

Man, memories.

Didn't Stephen Woods run that site? Vaguely recall something about losing the server or some such situation.

Yeah, Sorry .. I was in a hurry and didn't find anything quick and thought it might have helped.

I recall reading some sort of explanation/speculation, along the lines of what Rick just mentioned:

But with a little more searching, I still didn't find it. The best was this this November 26, 2007, post from lauramac:

Sorry... Owlzone vanished on us a few years ago, and (AFAIK) no one around here *still* knows what happened there.

RE: The Owl Zone - Brookes Owl - 12-22-2016 07:38 PM

I was only lurking at the time but my recollection (not to be trusted) is that the site went down a few times late in its life and some of those outages lasted for quite a while, days even. I also recall (subject to same disclaimer) that we'd had a lot of trolling and the Hatfield griping had begun. Wouldn't be surprised if Woods just decided he'd had enough.

My wife still says, "Stop wasting time on Owl Zone!"

And just as back then, she has a point.

RE: The Owl Zone - Grungy - 12-23-2016 10:54 AM

Was Owl Zone part of the UseNet, or a free-standing BB?
I don't recall (which is happening more often, these days)...

RE: The Owl Zone - Da.Owl - 12-23-2016 01:16 PM

Steven told a number of us that his home had been burgled and all the PC equipment was taken. I believe he gave it up at that point.

Wasn't that about the same time that the Rice and UT locker rooms were burgled on the eve of the super-regionals in 2002?

Authorities suspect the incidents were related...

???? 2002 Super-Regional: LSU at Rice

Rice and UT played in Omaha (Vince Sinisi thrown out at home in a 1-run loss).

Vaguely recall the locker room story - - you're saying locker rooms were burgled in Houston and Austin simultaneously?

It was indeed two break-ins at two different sites. But it turns out the sites were Rice and UH (who was about to leave for Austin to play a super-regional at UT -- that must be why I recalled a UT connection). Here are AP and Hou Chron stories:

Mike, I guess I meant, why did it become defunct. I never understood.

I know that the admin had some problems with identity theft. I think that eventually, the site registration expired and someone sat on the address. It seems to me that was the final nail in the coffin.

The latter. I think Woods paid for it to be hosted somewhere.

I'm reasonably certain that Owlzone died in 2005. Finding this forum here was memorable to me because I was living out of the country then, and trying to get updates on the 2005 baseball playoffs. I remember that googling owlzone kept turning up links to some other fan site - I think a rugby or Australian rules football team.

But at some point, a search on "whatever happened to owlzone" or similar got me here. I think a Lauramac post.

I believe it was ColOwl who told me about this site.

I think it was 2004. I think there may have been some transition period... kind of like "this site exists if there's an owlzone outage"

RE: The Owl Zone - grol - 12-26-2016 10:58 AM

Is there a way to determine the earliest Rice subscribers to this list?

I remember vaguely that it was recommended by LauraMac, but not how I found out.

RE: The Owl Zone - Ranger - 12-26-2016 11:25 AM

I remember Laura Mac was the moderator. Where is she now.

Virtually certain OZ went down in spring 2005 because I was on here a month or so later and this site says I joined in June 2005.
