I could be a coaching genius too if I had far and away the best recruiting class every year. If he could win it all at Cincinnati, then I would be convinced he is a Jedi Coach.

You are aware that part of college coaching is the recruiting right? Next you will complain he shouldn't be considered a great coach because he has good assistant coaches helping him. 01-wingedeagle

You must have been thrilled with TT's approach: no coaching, no recruiting, no good assistants.

Don't be stupid. Of course I am aware recruiting is important. Recruiting is why Alabama wins. Just don't try to tell me Sabin is obviously a great game coach and that time to prepare will make all the difference. All the difference will be that he has recruited far better talent to work with.

The game coaching helps quite a bit too, but he would only have to be good (not great) at that to win with his recruited talent.

RE: All Things Bowl-Rama Thread - bearcatmark - 12-15-2016 11:49 AM

I think Saban is a great game coach (particularly defensively) which is what has made him so devastating at Alabama where he already has a ton of built in advantages. I'm really interested to see what Washington does though, as I think Chris Peterson is pretty spectacular given time to really prep a game.

RE: All Things Bowl-Rama Thread - Billy_Bearcat - 12-15-2016 12:02 PM

Urban is a far superior game coach to Saban. If you gave both a similar roster Urb's team would win by a couple scores.

RE: All Things Bowl-Rama Thread - JackieTreehorn - 12-15-2016 12:13 PM

Would personally like to see Washington and Clemson in the finals. Sick of Alabama and tO$U, plus it gets our new coach back to work sooner.

I was being a little tongue-in-cheek with the jedi reference but I don't feel his recruiting advantages (resulting in part from the Alabama brand and part from Saban himself) should discount that he is one the best coaches in college football. I was keying more on his ability to keep his team to play within themselves (not distracted by the hype), play for the moment (not looking ahead) and not making self-inflicted mistakes in addition to what has already been mentioned. You can argue other programs recruit really well but you still have to coach 'em and execute the game plans (pre and in-game).

What I said was the recruiting has to be considered part of the overall coach evaluation. Alabama wins because it combines great recruiting with great coaching.

I do not think if you took an average coach and gave him Alabama's team for the season the result would be the same.

Their Achilles Heel is the offense had to replace a ton from last year and they have a bunch of true frosh in the 2 deep. If they lose it will be because they run into someone they have a real track meet with. I don't think this offense bears Clemson last year.

And without a doubt in my mind, Saban is the greatest coach in his generation. The guy is part Bob Huggins, part Bill Belichek and part Bill Parcels. Those dudes run through a wall for him or they beat feet.

He also still runs the secondary drills in camp, practice and pre-game. That is his baby. Fun to watch him out there still teaching.

This may be listed under the snoozefest games, but I would be very happy to see Army win a bowl game.

x2. Go Army.

I have to agree, even though it will break my fiancee's heart (OSU fan/alum).

Actually, I take that back... I can't root against OSU in the playoff, unfortunately. 03-banghead

Maybe not outwardly :)

RE: All Things Bowl-O-Rama Thread - Nobones - 12-16-2016 10:00 AM

Dec. 27 Holiday San Diego, Calif. 7 p.m. (ESPN) Minnesota (8-4) vs. Washington State (8-4).

Looks like this one will be an issue. Minnesota players said they will boycott the game. Look like 10 players may have been suspended. Can't say that I care.

RE: All Things Bowl-O-Rama Thread - UCGrad1992 - 12-17-2016 09:40 AM

Here is the slate for today:

New Orleans, 9 p.m. (ESPN) - UL Lafayette (6-6) vs. Southern Miss (6-6)

Cure, 5:30 p.m.(CBSSN) - UCF (6-6) vs. Arkansas State (7-5)

Camellia, 5:30 p.m. (ESPN) - Appalachian State (9-3) vs. Toledo (9-3)

Las Vegas, 3:30 p.m. (ABC) - San Diego State (10-3) vs. Houston (9-3)

New Mexico, 2 p.m. (ESPN) - Texas-San Antonio (6-6) vs. New Mexico (8-4)

I'm most interested in the Vegas Bowl in terms of matchups followed by the Camellia Bowl. Will pull for the AAC reps of course. Enjoy...

I kind of want Miami to win, just because I admire what Chuck Martin has done. It would be a YUGE upset if they pulled it off.

LV Bowl should be interesting to watch Pumphrey try to run against Ed Oliver.
