AAC Bowl Lineup?? - LetsGoUC - 12-12-2016 04:00 PM

What happened to the bowl games this year? According to the AAC's web site they were supposed to have 4 P5 bowl opponents for 2016, yet only have two...

http://theamerican.org/news/2013/12/5/fb_1205134743.aspx

We were supposed to get an ACC team in the Beef O Brady bowl and a Big 12 opponent in the Armed Forces bowl...what did I miss here?

RE: AAC Bowl Lineup?? - otown - 12-12-2016 04:02 PM

When the P5 leagues can't fill their bowls........ guess which bowls they choose to drop. We are down on the totem pole.

RE: AAC Bowl Lineup?? - BullsFanInTX - 12-12-2016 04:07 PM

St Pete bowl didn't get an AAC opponent because ND wasn't bowl eligible (how often will that happen).

Big 12 also did not have enough teams to fill all it's slots.

The Birmingham and Military bowls are not on the bottom of the SEC's and ACC's pecking order. That's why they were filled.

Birmingham picks above Independence for SEC, and Military is in a bowl pool that picks ahead of St Pete.

RE: AAC Bowl Lineup?? - MechaKnight - 12-12-2016 04:43 PM

Armed Forces is simple. B12 sucks this year and couldn't fill their bowls. They are already below the AAC in some conference rankings so they probably jumped at the chance to get out of playing the AAC in a bowl.

St Pete is more complicated. It's supposed to be AAC vs ACC. The ACC couldn't fill their bowls so we got Miami (OH) as a replacement. Aresco did some horse trading so instead of playing a MAC team in St Pete we get to send Houston to play MWC champ SDSU in Las Vegas.

RE: AAC Bowl Lineup?? - BullsFanInTX - 12-12-2016 05:02 PM

We need to get the Liberty Bowl back next go around, along with some other better bowls.

RE: AAC Bowl Lineup?? - Cubanbull - 12-12-2016 05:30 PM

We need to target bowls like The Armed Forces Bowl that failed to get a B12 team. Also the Independence Bowl should be another target. The Liberty is not dropping their SEC vs B12 match up for us.

I agree these seem like two bowls that are solid mid tier and would fit nicely in the lineup. Drop the Bahamas, Hawaii and Boca tie ins or something along those lines. I think the league should do a quasi alliance with Army say for 4 guaranteed games a year and to share the bowl lineup. I think having them and Navy would help land better bowls sort of like the Notre Dame deal with the ACC for football. The y would rotate through the 12 teams so you would play the twic over a 6 year period. I would say with them in the mix you could lock up the Military and Armed Forces again.

I agree about Bahamas Bowl. That game in that stadium is not good.
I think Boca is good for proximity and Hawaii is good for players to visit.
I think
Bham vs SEC
Military vs ACC
independence vs SEC or ACC
Armed Forces vs B12 or MWC
Miami if it could be upgraded vs ACC / CUSA
Boca vs CUSA/ MAC
St Pete vs CUSA/ MAC
Cure Orlando vs SBC

That's 8 bowls and I agree get Army involved in the bowl deals.

Not great but would be a step up.

That bowl lineup sucks.

Why can't we get Liberty if we offer them #1, and let's say we're coming off 2 or 3 years where we won a NY6 bowl.

CUSA was able to get a Liberty bowl tie in, so there's no reason we can't eventually.

It's alone about money and drawing fans and the Liberty is not dropping the SEC/ B12 for the AAC. Want better bowls? Show up for the ones we have. 5-6 k traveling fans will not get us the Liberty.

I would try to switch out boca for maybe New Orleans to have them split up 4 west and 4 eastern so you can hopefully have bowls that are easier to drive too. 3 Florida bowls are enough in my opinion.

The hard truth is no bowl is giving up a Power 5 tie to take a G5 team. If we want a better bowl---we need to dramatically increase the payout of the Miami Beach Bowl and out bid an existing bowl for a decent P5 opponent (Ive yet to see a P5 turn down money). The only bowl that will do something like that for us is a bowl we own.

The Saint Pete bowl is about as bad as you get...
1) An indoor bowl...in FLORIDA.
2) An indoor bowl...played in a BASEBALL STADIUM...in Florida.
3) An indoor bowl...played in a baseball stadium...which even the baseball team wants to abandon...in Florida.

Saint Petersburg--and the nearby Saint Petersburg Beach--is a GREAT LOCATION. But the Suncoast Dome--or whatever they're calling that abomination now--is a TERRIBLE VENUE. Period. End-of-story. If it were an outside game...hell, even a retractable dome...it would be amazing. But that stadium is terrible.

Next is Birmingham. Need I say more? Another terrible stadium without even the good location to commend it. Birmingham. In January. In a decrepit stadium. Yeah...let's go there!

Only slightly above that is...wait for it... SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA. But at least that is a "Name" bowl. And there's a casino. And the slightly amusing past-time of watching dead cows float down the river.

And the decent venues we do have are against terrible opponents. The best bowl this conference can throw out there is the Military Bowl...which, depending upon the weather could be terrible.

And I don't see any prospects of the situation getting better.

RE: AAC Bowl Lineup?? - Bull - 12-12-2016 07:49 PM

I have to think, with everything we've accomplished, we're reaching a level of gravitas where our champion becomes more attractive than an 6-6 team from the ACC or B12...

If not, keep fighting...

Not true. The Liberty doubled its payout to move up to an SEC-B12 selection. It has priced itself out of the AAC, much less CUSA.

I agree that the league should be much more attractive. Who knows what that will ultimately mean though. I would think getting a full tie to Armed Forces and Independence would be an upgrade over Bahamas, Boca, Cure, etc.. but still not top tier. Guess we shall see. I do agree with another poster about upgrading Miami Beach as well if at all possible. I have seen a couple of bowls extend already so hopefully Aresco is making some calls because the league is attractive.

According to this April 2014 release, AAC DOES have Armed Forces Bowl each of the next three years, vs BigXII
