Since Grand Canyon is becoming eligible soon? Could some more D2 call ups be coming soon to stabilize the WAC? Some football schools could be called up as well like West Texas A&M who was a former conference mates to New Mexico State. They are building a brand new on campus football stadium which many are speculating they are going forward outside of Lone Star Conference and other Texas schools are looking to join the Southland Conference.

Probably, since I can't see them just giving up. Just like all minor conferences, they would rather try to keep up with the Joneses and be a laughingstock instead of giving up and saving face.

Unless the WAC adds FCS football, they will be hard-pressed to expand. The are really no options in the west for expansion of schools that don't play football. The only way they are going to be really able to expand is if they add FCS football.
Adding FCS football could give more options for the Big Sky to shed a few teams to the WAC.

Cal Baptist is probably on deck for WAC membership.

The WAC has the most value of any FCS conference. The WAC and Big Sky will announce a realignment. The Big Sky is the only FCS conference that can offer UVU, GCU, Bakersfield, and Seattle an appropriate geography.

Well, you know, other than CSU-B to the Big West and Seattle to the WCC.

That is the reason the WAC needs to expand to survive.

Seattle wants the WCC
CSU-B wants the Big West
Grand Canyon would take either
UMKC - could go back to the Summit
NMSU - would take Sun Belt all-sports invite
Chicago State - may close or drop athletics
Utah Valley - kinda stuck.

To be fair, unless you're in one of 4 conferences you'd like to get into a different one. It's not like this is a WAC-only issue.

RE: WAC To Expand? - MplsBison - 11-28-2016 01:45 PM

dback,

Just out of curiosity ... if Big Sky sheds football members, letting the remainders go to the FCS WAC for example, who would you prefer for the Big Sky "eighth"??

EWU/Idaho/Montana/MT St/ID St/Weber/NAU/ .... S Utah?
EWU/Idaho/Montana/MT St/ID St/Weber/NAU/ .... Portland St?

I think the former makes more sense, though it breaks with the idea of going with historic members.

RE: WAC To Expand? - sundodger - 11-28-2016 01:52 PM

Gonzaga does not want Seattle, or so the story goes. It does make some sense even if you will not find an honest published article stating as much. Gonzaga is very popular here in Seattle, admitting SU would take some attention away from Gonzaga here in Seattle. Since SU plays their home games at the Key, they could probably lean on the city to not allow the Gonzaga battle in Seattle at the Key. As now the two schools would be conference mates it is easier for them to play the not in our gym card with the city. Not sure how much leverage they would have in that case but likely more than they do today as WAC members. (although to be fair GU is not playing a home game in Seattle this year).

I do think this happens someday but not for several more years.

FWIW with regards to a potential WAC/Big-Sky merger, Western Washington University (now non-FB D2) was talking of moving up but that was just as the recession hit. So far as I know no talk since then. They could be a hoops only fit for the Sky eventually, but I doubt it.

But most conferences aren't close to the minimum. And most conferences, other than WAC/A-Sun, have schools in other conferences that would join them.

IE - if say, Idaho, Montana and Montana State formed an "Upper Plains Conference" with the four Dakota schools, the Big Sky would still be at 9, and could easily get Utah Valley, CSU-Bakersfield, etc.

The WAC's only way forward is with D2 schools.

SUU would be my preference, but the northern members would likely want PSU.

I agree, the WAC is shakier than most other D1 conferences. I'm just saying that for every WAC school wishing it could be somewhere else, there is some other have-not wishing to be in the WAC*. There's still a ways to go before the actual bottom of the barrel is reached.

So safe to say you'd be against joining SUU, N Colo, NM St, and others in the FCS WAC??

I get that NAU has pretty much always been on an island in the Big Sky, even when Nevada was there (Reno really isn't that close).

RE: WAC To Expand? - LatahCounty - 11-28-2016 02:48 PM

I like NAU. It seems like they have potential to be a lot more than they currently are athletically and I'd be curious to hear why they've stalled out in the Big Sky for the past 50 years.

RE: WAC To Expand? - MplsBison - 11-28-2016 02:52 PM

LOL!

"Hey guys, you know those past 50 years where you haven't done anything?? What's up with that??"
