If WMU wins the MACC is it the best MAC team ever? - rsswmu - 11-27-2016 10:09 PM

If WMU can go 13-0 and beat Ohio are they the best MAC team ever? I'm not saying the would be just wondering what people's thoughts are.

As much as I'd like to say yes, Marshall's 1999 team was really top notch. Not just the high octane offense, but one of the best defenses the conference had ever seen. Highest point total they allowed during the regular season was 17 (at WMU).

Agreed. 1999 Marshall

However, should WMU manage to win the MACC and the Cotton Bowl, rankings subject to review...

Oh for the love...

Accomplish something before trying to make proclamations. Win the MACCG and then we can revisit this

If WMU goes 14-0....yes

The Huskie 2012 team was better than WMU imo

Yeah, I would say that's very likely the best. NIU 2012 & 2013 are right up there too, as is WMU this year. I would say WMU not being the best ever is due to their defense.

This is assuming that WMU wins the MACC, which I think there is a 99.99% chance of, but I would argue that they would be better than the 2012 NIU team. That NIU team lost to a 4-8 Iowa team. Then they beat a 2-10 Army team by only one. Then they beat a 1-11 Kansas team, at home, by only 7. They finished the year 12-2.

Winning the MACC would make WMU 13-0. We beat a 6-6 Northwestern at their place. Beat a 3-9 Illinois by 24 at their place. Beat a 4-7 Georgia Southern team by 18. Our closest game in the MAC was a 14 point win and we had two shutouts.

I'd argue WMU has the better team.

I think WMU has a chance to have the best all-time MAC ranking (which is currently 10th) IF they win the MACC and the BOWL Game.

Toledo had a great run in the early 70's (although no real signature out of conference or bowl win) and some really good teams in the late 90's/early 2000's.

Marshall's team in the late 90's was mentioned- they had a lot of good teams in that era

Miami from 1973-1975 went 32-1-1 and finished in the top 20 all three years. In those years they beat Florida, Georgia and South Carolina in successive bowl games (they were 7-4 type SEC teams). Those teams also won non-conference games vs. Kentucky, South Carolina (a different year), Purdue (twice) and they tied Purdue and lost to Michigan State by 1. The 1974 team finished 10-0-1 and beat Georgia in the Tangerine Bowl 21-10 to finish 10th in the nation

Miami in 2003 went 13-1 with non-conference wins over Northwestern by 30 (who was 6-6 and made a bowl- similar season to this year), Colorado State (Sonny Lubick years), Cincinnati and a 21 point bowl win over Louisville. They did lose to Iowa 21-3. They finished 10th- they were 5th in the Sagarin and they had an NFL hall of fame QB.

come on man, what are you trying to do?! Let's win the MACC first, THEN talk about stuff like this

RE: If WMU wins the MACC is it the best MAC team ever? - MaddDawgz02 - 11-28-2016 08:52 AM

Broncos have not had that difficult opponent though, that is a problem when talking about their historical rank

Who cares about whether they are the best or not right now. Let's just focus on the next game the Ohio season and then the bowl game. Let the rest of that stuff sort itself out when the dust settles.

I don't think that would be fair to say if WMU went 14-0. One can make the argument 2009 CMU was better than 2012 NIU, but it's impossible to say. They played different schedules. But, NIU has the better legacy because of the Orange Bowl. CMU that year had to play 6-6 MSU, 8-4 BC, and 8-4 Arizona.

The better question would be would 2016 WMU have the better legacy. Yes, they likely would.

2012 NIU lost to 4-8 Iowa and beat 1-11 Kansas by a TD. 2016 WMU with the exception of 6-6 Northwestern, has destroyed everyone.

This. Right now this discussion is like determining who is the best mathematician in the world based on the result of a basic addition and subtraction test. This team is certainly among the best in recent history, but 12-0 may not be as good as some of the 12-2 teams like 2009 CMU or NIU. For instance the two teams CMU lost to in 2009, Arizona and BC both on the road (and Arizona after a 4 hour lightning delay) are both much better than any team WMU has played this season. CMU's signature win that season was against a 6-6 MSU team, which is similar to the win over NW. CMU also steamrolled the MAC that season, going undefeated every game a double digit win except for UB on the road.

That's just the 2009 CMU team, then you have the Marshall, Miami, BG teams of late 90's early 2000s as well. With WMU's schedule, at this point, it's not as simple as saying 12-0>a 1 or 2 loss season.

It's a good point. Just like 2011 Alabama is probably the best college team in my lifetime even though they finished 12-1. The team allowed 8 ppg for crying out loud. They allowed more than 14 points only once the entire season.

If WMU goes 14-0 then yes. Their 14th win will be better than any win the MAC has ever had probably.

WMU is the first MAC team ever to defeat all conference opponents by 14 points or more.

If WMU wins the MACC and their Cotton Bowl game to finish 14-0, then yes, I think they certainly would warrant strong consideration of best MAC team ever.....OTOH, as a few posters have already mentioned we have had a number of very good MAC teams in our history, with 3 attaining a top ten final ranking. Those teams are the 1974 and 2003 Miami teams, and the 1999 Marshall team.

Admittedly, I am something of a Miami "homer", but strong consideration should be given the great Miami teams of 1973-74-75 during a stretch that Miami went 31-1-1 and won 3 consecutive MAC titles and Tangerine Bowls, defeating Florida, Georgia and So. Carolina. The defensively minded 1974 team went 10-0-1, and outscored its opponents 303-86, and beat Georgia 21-10 in the Tangerine Bowl. That means Miami gave up an average of less than 8 points a game to the opposition. That team finished #10 in the final AP poll.

The undefeated (11-0) 1973 Miami team is often overlooked since they kind of came out of nowwhere and only were able to manage #15 in the final AP poll. But they were also dominant defensively, giving up only 76 points alll year, less than a TD a game. Miami ran an option attack, and in the Tangerine Bowl that year easily defeated a 7-4 Florida team than came into the game on a 5 game winning streak, having beaten #19 Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, Miami (FL) and Florida State. In the Tangerine Bowl, Miami only completed one pass and ran for 239 yards, holding Florida to 90 yards rushing and 99 yards passing in a 16-7 win.

RE: If WMU wins the MACC is it the best MAC team ever? - BobcatEngineer - 11-28-2016 10:43 AM

The 1960 Ohio Bobcats went undefeated, with 5 shutouts. No team was able to score more than 8 points on them.

AP and UPI polls had the Bobcats the "Small School National Champions".

1960 was a long time ago, and the game has changed considerably, but I still think it's worth mentioning.
