WKU is Ranked 32nd in the AP Poll - WKUAlum92 - 11-13-2016 03:25 PM

If we beat Marshall and then Louisiana Tech in the C-USA Championship Game, we could finish the season in the Top 25 if we win our Bowl Game.
We finished last season Ranked 24th in the Country.

No big deal but there is no such 32nd ranking in the AP poll. WKU is getting votes in the AP poll. You are either ranked in the top 25 or not.
BTW #25 Troy is the first ever Sunbelt Team to be ranked

The news media has changed over the years what they view is a ranked team.
While the AP Poll currently lists the Top 25 teams in the nation, from 1936 to 1961 the wire service only ranked 20 teams. From 1962 to 1967 only 10 teams were recognized. From 1968 to 1988, the AP again resumed its Top 20 before expanding to the current 25 teams in 1989.
I have no problem with any team receiving points in the poll to say they are ranked 27th, 30th or 32nd, etc. The AP has changed several times over the years how they list a team being ranked or not.

You mentioned Troy being ranked 25th in the Country. There are 38 teams this week receiving points in the AP Poll. Of the 38 teams receiving points, Troy received the 25th most points. Houston received the 26th most points. You would not say that Houston is 26th in the AP Poll?

Our fans spouted a numerical rank in the coaches poll when we received 1 vote. It not official but everyone understands what it means.

Nope and neither would any media or press release because that is not how the AP Top 25 is used or is intended to be used. The accurate way to say this is: WKU is receiving so many votes in AP poll. Not a ranking that doesn't even exist

Even though I'm a little confused as to how LA Tech could win 7 straight games --including a win over WKU-- and average over 50 points a game during this stretch, and still not be ranked while WKU is, I'm still happy for you. I'm happy for WKU and CUSA. We need more of this.

No, because the sports writers in the AP poll vote for 25 teams (with the 1rst place pick getting 25 points and the 25th place team getting 1 point). There will be "others receiving votes" but you don't know where they would actually be ranked if the voters got 30 votes, 40 votes, 50 votes etc. In theory a team could receive a lot of 30th place votes and overtake a team that got a few 25th place votes. But under the logic of the poll there are only as many ranked teams as there votes on the ballot. It's nice to be mentioned, but it is not the same as ranked.

I had that thought also....
but mistake or not I think it would be had to find 30 other teams playing better than Western is right now.
The numbers (on both sides of the ball) Western is putting up in a little over 45 minutes of football are pretty damn good.

The guy voting for the wrong team is hilarious. I don't see us being ranked this season. That debacle at the end of the Vandy game cost us any chance of that.

Only way to be ranked at the end is to blowout the final 3 opponents. It'd be an extra bonus of the bowl game opponent is a P5 team.
