How do we manage time / touches between Evans, Adams, Jackson, and Lott? All have 15-20+ ppg potential from the 1 or 2. A good problem to have I guess.

Adams? Do you mean Ellis?

Without speaking for Talon, I think he means freshman Ako Adams. Ellis is obviously more of 3-4.

I meant Ako Adams. I recall rumblings that he has looked strong in early workouts / off-season work and was a good scorer in HS. Others probably better informed than I.

Everyone I've talked with that has seen him raves about Ako Adams.

Gotta love a lefty who can get to the rim and played in probably one of the top HS leagues in the country.

I've talked to Coach Rhodes and a couple of other basketball observers (i.e. played at Rice), and their comments are (i) Robert Martin has been great in the fall (ii) Chad Lott has been playing really well, is fully recovered and will clearly get a bunch of playing time and (ii) Austin Meyer is much further along than what was anticipated.

All good news...

Just stay healthy guys!

I think mostly everyone will play in an up tempo program.

Can November please get here sooner? (That would encompass both the election and start of basketball). Based on what I saw last year and what I have heard so far this year, allocating PT is going to be difficult. Isn't that awesome as opposed to finding walkon's from the basketball team or the student body?

I still think he starts games as Kentucky did a couple years back with a two team rotation. We finally have the personnel and depth for Coach to deploy his "40 minutes of hell" pressing defense, and that requires frequent substitution if you plan to sustain it throughout.

My only concern with your suggestion is that if a guy gets injured, that can really throw things off. Particularly if guys in different rotations aren't used to playing with each other. Same problem if a guy fouls out. Or if you are in a late-game situation that favors mixing & matching for various reasons. Also prevents you from having a smaller or larger lineup based on the opposing team's strengths/weaknesses.

I'm fine with whatever Coach Rhoades decides to do ... so long as it works!

Notice I said "starts games" with the 2 team rotation. Kentucky started mixing and matching by late in the first half.

Conference USA preseason polls came out and Rice is picked to finish 9th. Marcus Evans is picked for the all-conference team. Wouldn't be surprised if the staff used this stuff as motivation.

I think we have top five talent in the league but in fairness, a) it's young and b) it's been a while since we've been competitive.

I think we'll finish higher than 9th.

I like the prediction....gives us motivation and perhaps we get overlooked early in the conference schedule.

I think it says in another thread that we have only one scholarship to give. so to a first approximation, this year's team is next year's team.

coach em up

Love the incentive function Rhoades faces. He already extracted a big raise for over delivering early and having Shaka leave VCU. I think his next big bump requires him to win CUSA

Although I would assume He negotiated a raise, in fact have any numbers been made public?

RE: 2016-2017 Basketball season is here - gsloth - 10-06-2016 09:26 PM

Am I the only one who questions whether Marcus Evans will actually be a first-team selection? I think he could be better than last year, but with the returning and new threats, I have a feeling his scoring is going to go down, which may lower his profile in the eyes of some who don't follow him closely.

Certainly, if others do contribute as expected, the team will have a better record, which should help his profile. But given how these teams sometimes seem to focus on the traditional stat categories, a lower scoring average may impact his award prospects. Though I hope he's making up for it with even more in every other category, particularly assists and steals.
