Poll: spend money on basketball or football - goniu1523 - 09-19-2016 05:03 PM

If we only have money to do one of the following, which one should Frazier do:

Buyout Rod Carey's contract

Or

Give a raise and extend Mark Montgomery's contract

And why?

I'm as big a fan as any of the basketball program, but it's obvious that our football program is what we're known for. That has to be the priority.

I think it was Goonsquad41 who suggested cutting the baseball, soccer and track programs and others that are non revenue generating and making a hard push w the extra money on football and basketball. Not saying at all that I agree w that, but it would be interesting to see if they ever went that route. Would be an extremely ballsy move by the AD

Easy answer, buy out Carey.

Even if we give Monte a raise and extension, if we win the MAC and go to the NCAA tourney (the goal right?) he will be snatched regardless of what we are paying and for how long.

NIU basketball goes 9-9 last season in the MAC and now we speak of raises and a contract extension? Did we not learn a lessen when we extended the Carey contract? Delusional. Under the current enrollment and state budget circumstances if the Board of Trustees approves such action the governor, who appoints NIU board members, should intervene and stop it.

Where's the option for "Other"? Neither is a real solution in my opinion. Montgomery doesn't deserve a raise till they Win the MAC at least( when they make the tourney their may not be a big enough raise to keep him from jumping ship, i.e. Bobby Hurley). Also it's too early to be planning his buyout unless you want to lose all his verbal commitments for next year. I call "premature" for both.

The point is immaterial.

Highly doubt they buy out Carey.

And it doesn't matter how much you offer Montgomery. Even with moderate success in near future he bolts. This isn't his last stop. Everyone knows that. Not only from $ aspect, but success and desire to be at better programs.

This is Carey's last stop at this level.

What is this money you speak of? The cupboard is bare.

ATHLETIC DIVISIONS OF THE NCAA. COLLEGES HAVE TO MEET CERTAIN STANDARDS TO COMPETE IN EACH DIVISION. Division I member schools are required to sponsor a minimum of seven sports for women and seven for men (or eight for women and six for men). This must include two sports for both men and women.
