Will UNC go to a bowl this year? - ken d - 09-19-2016 11:02 AM
The Heels started the season ranked #22. But to be bowl eligible, they must win four of their eight conference games. That's not a lock. Their schedule:
Pitt
@ FSU
Va Tech
@Miami
@Virginia
Georgia Tech
@Duke
NC State
Carolina is currently favored by 7 over Pitt, but that game sounds more like a tossup to me, especially if the Heels don't figure out how to stop the run. I think it's a must win for them as I expect them to be significant underdogs against FSU, VT, Miami and GT.
Do they go bowling, or does Fedora's seat start getting warm?

Good summary. It's a rivalry game, but I'd certainly take the Heels over the Pack right now. Overall I'd be surprised if UNC can only must 3-5 in league, and that would be a massive disappointment.

Carolina is beating GT. Miami and FSU are toughest games. 3-5 in league, Fedora should be fired.

Carolina picked a bad year to have two FCS games on the schedule. It makes their margin for error razor thin. An untimely penalty (which they have shown a knack for in recent years) or a blown coverage could be disastrous.

I have to admit I haven't seen any of UNC other than a few minutes vs. Georgia to open the year. I was surprised to see they allowed 28 to JMU though and clearly beating Illinois isn't impressive considering that they were boat raced by a MAC team this weekend. Hard to know what we're dealing with here.
Best guess, 4-4 is the floor and 6-2 the ceiling. I could see 6-2 tying for the Coastal lead, but the Canes are the current favorite for sure. VT, UNC, GT, and Pitt could factor in. So... your typical year in the Coastal.

Last year was an outlier for Carolina as far as conference records go. In the 10 seasons before that, they only managed as many as five wins one time (2012). Six times they won 4, twice they won 3, and in 2006 only 2. Somehow they almost always seem to find a way to be average.

Did UNC lose much on D? Pitt had a hard time running last year. Lets see but I suspect that Pitt will need to score a lot since Piit's defense is still very much a work in progress.

Record will be somewhere between 11-1 and 8-4. Definitely going bowling.

The Heels are 2-1. Wins against Virginia, Duke, Citadel & NC State gets them to 6 & bowl eligibility. Those are winnable games for them, I think they go bowling. Is that enough to keep their HC?

I don't believe so, good point. They should still get the 6 they need, I think. They have Pitt, VT & GT @ home, I believe & need 1 of these.

I don't believe so, good point. They should still get the 6 they need, I think.
When you play 2 FCS teams you have to win 7 games overall. Regardless, we'll be fine.

I don't see UNC getting 7 wins the way they've played so far.
Having said that, there won't be enough bowl teams to fill all slots, so 6-6 with 2 FCS wins WILL be good enough.
