What happens when you take advantage of opportunities - digibrink - 08-19-2016 09:36 PM

I know Houston will be back to a middle of the pack school after Herman leaves this year, but they are certainly taking advantage of their success last year. A shame that we could take advantage of our two huge opportunities (along with a lot of bad luck surrounding those instances).

Different scenario....BK left UC after our big 2009 year. Herman stayed at UH after theirs. Not apples to apples.

Had BK stayed at UC I'm sure we would have kept winning...they guy was/is a phenomenal coach that forced UC in the limelight in the city and demanded people pay attention, which they did. When BK was here UC football was a hot ticket. He left and we have replaced him with two coaches that were both less than he was/is. The program has dropped.

I gotta disagree. The performance on field has dropped, although two straight BCS Bowls is a pretty high bar to maintain, but the PROGRAM is much stronger than it was back then.

??????????? Can you please explain this

7-6 and getting our arse kicked at USF and again vs SDSU, revolving door in the assistant/coord ranks, lack of preparedness for games, lack of focus and dumb penalties during game all says otherwise. Please explain why you think the program is better off now vs under BK?

I think the program is stronger in that it can handle a few mediocre to down years without turning into a raging dumpster fire for an extended period. The administration is fully committed to seeing it succeed and prosper and we have an established brand that is not going away any time soon. Having said that, CTT better coach his azz off this season and avoid any embarrassing defeats or it's adios amigo.

I agree with you. Fox put out a list for the top 10 G5 teams for the upcoming season and needless to say we were not on it. Temple and UCONN were though. I get it is an opinion piece, but UCONN? The team we annually destroy? We surely have lost some of the momentum that was built up over the last decade which is quite frustrating.

Where do you want me to start? When BK was here, there was one place to practice rain, shine or snow-Nippert. Now we have Sheakley with two practice fields and the only indoor practice facility for football in the city. Nippert now looks like a real big time college stadium with suites, club seats, media areas and hopefully more is on the way. The weight room has been completely redone. The nutrition services and facilities have been completely overhauled. They were nonexistent when BK was here and the players ate crap with little supervision. A new player lounge was build. Academic services for the athletes are improved, and the recruiting budget has increased. The tech and video services are way ahead of what they were. We now have a much better clothing deal with UA.
You're bitching about one bad season on the field. Why do you think that coming off two BCS bowls we got passed over multiple times when the conference fell apart and now we're hopefully on the verge of getting out? Because the university has been building the program up which was seen as inferior to our peers in the BE during the last round of realignment/expansion.

You are correct in the program amenities....so I will concede there.

My gripe is the trajectory of the 'state of the program' which is downward. It's more than one bad season. Three years ago we played the worst FBS schedule of all time and won 9 games....woohoo. We have been killed in our bowl games all three years under tubs to underwhelming P5 teams. We have also had multiple what the heck losses. The amenities (Nippert, Sheakly, UA deal, etc. that you mention are great, no doubt.) The actual 'state of UC football' is shaky at best. This year Tubs better show something or I hope they kick his arse out.

It takes a fan with a short memory of the past to complain about a 9 win season! Not that long ago we hoped for .500 and a win over Miami.

9 wins vs a putrid schedule.....and then crap the bed in a bowl. If we were comparing this to pre 1993, sure but that isn't reality is it. We are comparing ourselves to the BK/Jones years and where we are right now sucks vs those years.

Excellent post, couldn't agree more. No doubt our fan base has grown since the BE/BK years which is great; but perspective and knowledge of program history has suffered.

Before Dantonio, we had 2 seasons with 8 wins since the 70s. Our schedule in those years was pretty putrid too:

1993 (8-3)
Austin Peay St - W
Bowling Green - L
Miami (OH) - W
Syracuse - L (they ended up 6-4-1)
Tulsa - W
Vanderbilt - L (they ended up 4-7)
Ball St - W
Toledo - W
Memphis - W
Houston - W
East Carolina - W

1997 (8-4)
Tulsa - W
Tulane - L
Kansas - W (they ended up 5-6)
Boston College - W (they ended up 4-7)
Memphis - W
UAB - W
Houston - L
Miami - W
Southern Miss - L
Louisville - W
East Carolina - L
Utah State - W (Bowl Game against a 6-6 Big West team)

The lost to Vanderbilt was particularly tough...night game 10-6...SEC home cooking. I came down from Fort Campbell to see it. Long drive back. Thank God for Papa John's and beer. Got out of the Army and season tickets the following season. No job though. 02-13-banana

RE: What happens when you take advantage of opportunities - dsquare - 08-22-2016 03:19 PM

There are very few programs that are consistently at the very top of the ladder year in and year out. When you consider the coaching turnover Uc has had they've been very consistent and had very good results. The recruiting impact of the turnover caught up with them on the defensive side of the ball, and hopefully we will see improvement this year with more experience having played quite a few "green" guys. That said, turnovers were the killer last year, not necessarily the talent on either side of the ball. Folks like to remember BK fondly, but if you study the scores we were far from a defensive juggernaut in those seasons. We were just fortunate enough to outscore folks. Hard to do that when you turn the ball over at a ridiculous rate. However, folks like to only remember the final score. A win hides a lot of scabs and warts.

RE: What happens when you take advantage of opportunities - chicago bearcat - 08-23-2016 11:52 AM

Houston has certainly made the most of its moment. But if we reach the big 12 and they dont, then obviously nothing else matters.
