Big Sky Conference joins the WOC (Western Officating Consortium) - MWC Tex - 08-16-2016 01:53 PM

A little change to the realignment stuff.

http://www.themw.com/news/western-officiating-consortium-expands-to-include-big-sky-conference-08-15-2016

The WOC (Western Officiating Consortium) now includes all D1 conferences in the Western US with expansion with the Big Sky conference.

What started as partnership with the MW and Pac-12 now includes the Big West, WCC, WAC and now the Big Sky.

Is there any other official's coordination between conferences elsewhere?

There are several.

Big12, Southland, OVC, CUSA in basketball since 2010. The AAC was also part of the consortium for a few years, but Ithink they moved to one with the B1G and other conferences recently.

The Bg12, Mountain West, and Southland have one in football. It started in 2007.

There are also officiating consortiums for women's sports.

I know that ACC officials work SoCon, SAC, and other lower division regional conferences.

Is some of the D2 conferences have officiatings part of this as well? There are some that are affiliates to Big West and all of them from D2. A lot of the west coast schools have water sports in with D1 west coast schools.

American Athletic Conference, the Southeastern Conference and the ASUN Conference have formed a men’s basketball officiating consortium. starting with 2016-17

ACC, Big East, A-10, and CAA are starting this too: http://www.theacc.com/news/acc-and-big-east-to-lead-men-s-basketball-officiating-alliance-06-28-2016

It's frustrating to me that the MAAC and some of the other East Coast conferences aren't in on it. The quality of ref can be quite variable.

In Basketball, Big Ten, MAAC, MAC, Summit and Northern Sun, with Horizon joining this year.

And the Big Ten and MAC have an agreement to share football officials.

I believe the MVFC is part of that as well.

Yes now it is.

MAC and B1G were two of the first conferences to share about 10 years ago. Has helped the MAC with costs.

Is it cost cutting for the conferences, logistics, quality of refs or all three that these consortiums are being created and expanded?

I guess I can answer my own question.
I can the benefits of a consortium regarding refs and being trained under the same umbrella for more consistency across conferences.

And now that I think about it, I can see the cost savings and logistics headaches it reduces on the conferences managing their own refs and assignment to games.

So it looks like there could be more consolidation in the Midwest and Eastern US as the Western US is all under the WOC.

They're trying to sell it as something that will improve quality and consistency in officiating. But really it's mostly logistics and a bit of cost cutting. It's much easier for basketball officials when officials based in Denver can work a game at CU and then a game at AFA, or officials based in Portland can work a game at Portland and then one at Oregon State, etc. Officials based in the LA area can work games from four conferences without ever leaving southern California. Might help with retaining good, experienced refs because they'll have much less travel than if they were working games for only one conference.

Northeastern conferences/schools have proven time and again to always miss the boat
