Major AAC storylines for 2016 season? - ArmoredUpKnight - 08-15-2016 08:58 AM

What are the major narratives the conference has this season? Here are some of mine.

#1 Can Houston bust the Playoff?
We have a top15 team in the preseason polls. If Houston can stay perfect, they could be the first G5 school to bust the Playoff. The selection committee has to Jeff Bower (old Southern Miss coach) is on the committee this year and he is certainly familiar with Houston. Jeff might be a guy who wants to see the Playoff include a G5 team.

#2 Can South Florida with their first conference championship?
Its a little crazy to think the Bulls have never won a conference title in football. No CUSA title, No Big East title, No American title... none in program history. This Bulls team is favored to win the East and if they can spoil a ranked Houston in December. That would be crazy!

#3 Can UCF rebound?
0-12 was shameful. Team has a new coach and can hopefully get the win-less monkey off its back. The new system should be fast and exciting and completely different from what UCF fans are used to seeing. If UCF can string together 6 wins, its a colossal success. But that seems very unlikely.

The storyline of the year in this conference has nothing to do with play on the field.

Dude is just trying to generate some discussion on something other than realignment. Not like he posted it in that thread.05-nono 07-coffee3

Scottie Montgomery leading ECU to an AAC title and top 25 ranking in his first year.

#4 What can we expect from ECU? New coach, new QB...will order be restored in Greenville after the firing of the beloved Coach Ruff? Lots of talent on the offensive side but can that talent turn into wins?

#1 Story line is what does B12 do.
#2 Can Houston live up to the ranking. That will be answered fairly early.
#3 Can USF fill the hype.
#4 Can Cincy, Memphis, Navy or Temple have a great season?
#5 Can UCF rebound, my guess is 0-12 dies in 3 weeks...

#5 Can Tulsa's defense finally turn the corner and at least be decent?

RE: Major AAC storylines for 2016 season? - invisiblehand - 08-15-2016 10:53 AM

I'm cautiously optimistic for Tulsa's defense. Quite a few seniors are being pushed by RS Freshman. (Brubaker, who I would say was one of our better DT's last season, got pushed to backup DE by a youngster) Also, the CB corps aren't looking like they're zombies out there like they were last season. More quality depth at LB, DE, CB and S. If the DT's can hold it together the defense will be stronger and faster.

#5A should be who the heck throws the ball if Evans gets the flu. None of the backups have impressed in fall camp.

Good points. I suppose the older guys getting pushed by the younger guys means our talent level is going up. At least I hope.

They talked like Chad President had improved his throwing in the off-season. If he gets that down he could be dangerous given his athleticism. Idk if it's enough to get the back-up job this year though.

Nice work by the OP. I actually think you nailed the top 3.

RE: Major AAC storylines for 2016 season? - a cat but also a bear - 08-15-2016 11:11 AM

The American was STRONG last year. Biggest headlines are:

1. Can USF and Temple maintain the positive momentum?
2. Will Houston live up to expectations?
3. How will the first year coaches fair?
-- Memphis life without Paxton Lynch
-- ECU life after Ruff
-- Tulane life after that guy that was your coach before and was no good
-- UCF, win some games guys!
4. How much improvement will Tulsa and SMU make in their second years with a new coach
5. How badly will Tuberville mismanage his talent? Is this his final year?

RE: Major AAC storylines for 2016 season? - pesik - 08-15-2016 11:13 AM

Is Memphis success sustainable

Smu statiscally was one of the most improve teams in the nation, but it didn't improve their win total, can the wins come in year 2

All things diaco, uconn on paper should have a breakout year does it come to fruition

Navy without Reynolds

New coaches, how do they do

Gunner Kiel and his last chance to prove he is an nfl Qb..

Just sayin. Biggest story line of the year is who is leaving and who is coming. Don't have to get a chapped rear over it.

Yup. That will likely overshadow much of what the AAC may accomplish this season as a strong AAC will be seen as a "temporary" (assumption being that it will be weakened by the poaching to come).
