As this year's presidential campaign has unfolded, I can't help but wonder if we're going to see a similar outcome as happened in 1964. The similarities between the two elections are striking.
The GOP nominated a candidate from the far right (Goldwater) who was a staunch conservative, who voted against the Civil Rights Act, who advocated for the use of tactical nuclear weapons in Vietnam, and for whom many prominent Republicans refused to campaign or endorse.
Meanwhile, the Democrats nominated a party "elitist" & Washington insider (Johnson), who was not fully trusted by white liberals, who had a history as a corrupt politician (LBJ either stole a Senate primary election in 1948 or had it stolen for him depending on who believe), who was supported by huge numbers of minority voters, who probably wouldn't have been the nominee if the party had someone better (if Kennedy hadn't been killed, he would've been the nominee).
We all know how that ended up and while it's doubtful Clinton will win as largely as LBJ did, considering how different he electoral landscape is from 50 years ago, it's entirely possible that she wins by a bigger margin than Obama did in either of his wins.
And remember that ad that only ran once during the '64 election cycle with the little girl picking petals off the flower? Would fit pretty well for this year if you ask me.
