AP ranks top 100 teams of all-time (8 AAC schools make the cut) - Indiana Bones - 08-02-2016 03:07 PM

http://collegefootball.ap.org/top-100

The Associated Press has been ranking the best teams in college football since 1936. Over 80 years and 1,103 polls, a total of 165 schools have been ranked and 44 of them have been ranked No. 1 (Minnesota was the first).

To determine the all-time Top 25, the AP formula counted poll appearances (one point) to mark consistency, No. 1 rankings (two points) to acknowledge elite programs and gave a bonus for AP championships (10 points).

49) UH
55) SMU
60) Navy
70) Tulane
77) Tulsa
81) UC
88) ECU
94) USF

*If Army joined they'd be the highest ranked AAC team at #42

They also have Dartmouth ahead of ECU. That is when I stopped reading.

Big 12 should just take the 2 or 4 top ranked available non p5 teams from this AP list and make the invites!

Do those rankings come with or without NCAA sanctions/penalties? Asking for a friend...

USF has only had a Football team for 19 years. How much further up that list would we be with 60 more years or so. 05-stirthepot

That's always been the case and the head to head record is even higher by a long shot. I like Cincy tho!

Makes sense when you look at the big picture and include a real history, but I am a bit shocked Navy's dominance for a period of time post WWII didn't rank them out a little higher.

Why, just because it happened before you were born? I admit it should be taken with a grain of salt but all that stuff that happened a long time ago is still relevant. There are programs that were large back in the leather helmet era that historically are more important than South Florida (#94).

By the way, #94 could very well be San Francisco and given how long South Florida has been D-I, I'd say it's more likely. The writer of the article should have clarified that.

Here's a different list based on the same exact concept:

http://cfn.scout.com/2/1097657.html

OU ranks number 1. South Florida doesn't rate at all as best I can tell but San Francisco is 109.

Funny how Rice has been irrelevant for over a half cenetury yet still ranks relatively high, including above Texas Trek.

Dartmouth was very good in the late 60's and early 70's, Bengal LB'er great Reggie Williams was there from 1972-1976. Yale was also good back then.

Hey...it's ok little guy, ECU is getting closer to catching those dominant programs like March Field and Great Lakes and Bainbridge NTU. See, I mention these because military training commands fielding teams in WW2 had more points...so the AP took them out. Luckily, Scout included them using the AP formula to provide some levity. Almost as much levity as Memphis having....1 point. Thanks for that Scout.

Heck...even Fordam is ranked higher than most of the AAC. But don't worry guys...the laugh is on them. Peruna killed their mascot at a game once, so I think we win this one.
