This needs to be shown to school presidents in other conferences as expansion unfolds.

I guess you just need to pick your source to have the best college in state. Forbes lists Auburn as the best college in Alabama.

Really? You never seem to be content unless you're peeing on someone's parade.

Here's how each calculated their rankings. Forbes takes into account Rate My Professor, Entertainment Award winners and Debt statistics in addition to standard academic measures, while CWUR is strictly business success, academics and research stats.

CWUR World University Rankings:
1) Quality of Education, measured by the number of a university's alumni who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals relative to the university's size [25%]
2) Alumni Employment, measured by the number of a university's alumni who have held CEO positions at the world's top companies relative to the university's size [25%]
3) Quality of Faculty, measured by the number of academics who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals [25%]
4) Publications, measured by the number of research papers appearing in reputable journals [5%]
5) Influence, measured by the number of research papers appearing in highly-influential journals [5%]
6) Citations, measured by the number of highly-cited research papers [5%]
7) Broad Impact, measured by the university's h-index [5%]
8) Patents, measured by the number of international patent filings [5%]

FORBES America's Top Colleges:
1) Alumni on America's Leaders list (Power Women, 30 Under 30, CEO's on Global 2000, Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners, Guggenheim and MacArthur fellows, those elected to the National Academy of Sciences, Academy, Emmy, Tony and Grammy Award winners) (22.5%)
2) Student Transfer Rate (12.5%)
3) Student Loan Default Rates (12.5%)
4) Academic Success (10%)
5) Average Federal Student Debt Load (10%)
6) Student Evaluations on Rate My Professor (10%)
7) Salary of Alumni (Payscale.com) (10%)
8) Graduation Rate (5%)
9) Freshman to Sophomore Retention Rate (2.5%)
10) Predicted vs. actual percent of students taking federal loans (2.5%)
11) Predicted vs. actual graduation rate (2.5%)

"4) Academic Success (10%)" ~ That pretty well explains AU being rated higher.

I would think the Forbes criteria would be a better indicator of how well a school is performing. I would think UAB faculty would easily have a higher score based on what CWUR is looking at.

Rankings are worthless, there is a ranking methodology and group that has every school in it's top whatever.

#89 in patents is a huge indicator. It shows that there is a high degree of innovation at UAB.

If they would just add a category for self doubt or loathing we could move up. Really guys....

That was my point but it was called parade peeing.

I think it is apparent that the main question some would have would be - will this help us get into a better conference for athletics?

Well, hasn't helped us yet.

RE: AGAIN: UAB ranked among the world's top 150 universities. - ATTALLABLAZE - 07-27-2016 09:23 PM

It has not been utilized due to lack of leadership.

RE: AGAIN: UAB ranked among the world's top 150 universities. - the_blazerman - 07-28-2016 08:52 AM

Certainly so. Being ranked alone wouldn't get us an invite.

That combined with leadership & vision would give us a better chance.

To be fair HCBC uses them in recruiting and I feel certain the foundation will use them. ;-)

Bill Clark keeps using the line, "We're a top-30 university." At first I thought this was a bit disingenuous. But the reality is that football isn't competing against every university in the US; it's competing against the 120+ schools in FBS. We make the numbers work to our advantage.
