Trouble at Scout - georgia_tech_swagger - 07-12-2016 10:54 AM

For those who haven't heard yet, there's trouble over at Scout land ( http://awfulannouncing.com/2016/jim-heckman-out-at-scout-product-team-quits-en-masse-blames-russian-investors.html ).

If there is anybody here who is involved in Scout and interested in moving in here, I'd be more than happy to talk. Send me a PM or an email ( gts at csnbbs dot com ).

My bet is that Scout runs out of money very soon and folds up shop.

Late paychecks......sounds like the well is dry.
Russian "investors" with access to all of those IP addresses and credit card numbers of subscribers is a little frightening.

That's one reason why it's a good idea to "lose" each of your credit cards once a year, call the bank to report it lost, and get a new card with a new number.

I'm showing my ignorance here, but why would an individual give these guys a credit card number? What are you buying that you can't get for free?

Really? People pay for that? I assumed that when those sites asked you to become an "insider" that they just wanted your e-mail address.

Hey, reading threads there is like getting a free roller coaster ride. Just consume in moderation.

That's just great (I had already heard about this earlier) two of our biggest problem children took their petty fight to Scout. It has been nice to not have to deal with that for awhile. This could mean they'd come back after their "cooling off" periods.

I'm not sure it's going to be terrible for Scout overall. I know that the guy they fired was not very popular among publishers. Often times with these forums, you see a big disconnect between the company heads and the actual reporters and publishers for the various schools. It might do that company good to get under new control.

I'll be curious to see where this heads though

I often used pre-paid Visa/MC's for certain internet shopping sites for that kind of security. Costs only $5.00 to load them, and you don't have to worry about losing a lot if the number is compromised.

They are not just forums. They have team sites, and everything involved with that, from recruiting, behind the scenes stuff, etc. Usually during the peak of recruiting season I will be a member for a month or two, but I don't subscribe year round.

RE: Trouble at Scout - CrimsonPhantom - 07-14-2016 06:59 PM

Do not try posting this on a scout board, it gets deleted.

RE: Trouble at Scout - arkstfan - 07-18-2016 12:15 PM

I run a Scout site. The guy who got fired put together the investors to buy Scout from Fox, but he was also CEO of Rivals when it dot-bombed. Color me not upset.

The reality of the situation is this.

There are very very few websites that can generate enough money in advertising to employ people to go out and do interviews and shoot videos and produce analysis content.

If you are a Michigan fan or Notre Dame fan then yeah the coverage can be there. But outside the 10-20 largest P5 programs, the ad revenue just isn't there.

I totally understand the modern mindset is that if it is one the net it ought to be free but until there is more ad revenue you can't expect someone to go running out to the football complex and sit down with the defensive coordinator for a half hour to talk football during the work day for a few hundred dollars a month.

A fresh on the job reporter (tv or print) makes $1700 per month there are very few websites dedicated to a single school that generate half that in ad revenue per month.

Interested to see where this leads. Always liked Scout.
