Larry Brown resigning at SMU - Cat-Man - 07-08-2016 09:36 AM

Looks like SMU will soon be falling back into the abyss in basketball. What a shame. Sanctions aside, he at least helped give AAC basketball some cred.

Larry Brown lasted about as long as everyone expected Larry Brown to last.

Meh, the guy is 75 years old. How much longer did people expect the man to coach?

RE: Larry Brown resigning at SMU - nachoman91 - 07-08-2016 12:05 PM

Geesh. He's 75 years old, how long of a contract can he expect the school to give him?? Not to mention that he just put them on probation and missed the tournament on a year they had a good team.
Not that I care. I just as soon have everyone in the league suck and have UC go 28-3 every year and look good for expansion.

RE: Larry Brown resigning at SMU - UCGrad1992 - 07-08-2016 02:59 PM

Quote:A source told CBS Sports that Larry Brown texted the parents of SMU players early Friday to inform them that he's resigning after four seasons as the school's men's basketball coach. According to the source, Brown said he'd been in negotiations for a contract extension "for 20 months" but could not reach a deal and thus felt he had no choice but to resign. He apologized, the source said, and insisted this was never his plan. And Brown probably believes that. But this was always the way most figured his time at SMU would come to a close, if only because Brown has been leaving jobs abruptly after short stints literally since before I was born.
And I'm 39 years old.
Larry Movin' On Brown

Nice Larry. Take a dump on the program and don't even bother to wipe it up.

Larry Brown let us down.

He lasted a year longer than I thought he would. He probably still has one more good NCAA investigation in him for what went on under his watch as a nice parting gift.

Since he wanted a long term deal, he must want to coach for 4 more years or more. So who will hire him?

RE: Larry Brown resigning at SMU - Tim Johnson - 07-10-2016 12:25 AM

He's leaving SMU in good shape.

Tremendous coach, but I certainly wouldn't hire him. I'm sure somebody will...

Anyone that wants a relatively "Instant winner", and is not afraid of the sanctions when he wears out the welcome mat.

Tremendous coach? NIT, a crushing 1st round loss in the NCAA, and then a year on probation with no post season. More like tremendous couch.03-lmfao

Yes, he's lost quite a bit from his peak, but Larry has had a lot of long term success. He has taken two schools to the FF.

But, no, not worth hiring that's for sure.

RE: Larry Brown resigning at SMU - OKIcat - 07-10-2016 12:49 PM

No question, Larry Brown is a talented coach. But one has to wonder why SMU continues to demonstrate that they have more dollars than sense. The quick fix they got with Larry came with a very steep downside. His past behavior should have been the best predictor of future success (or in this case, compliance failure).

But it's so Texas-like culturally--go big or don't go at all. SMU has the resources but as long as they pursue the quick fix they will likely see more Larry Browns come and go.

We can argue about the overall trajectory of UC basketball under Mick, but stability has proven to be a positive in terms of recruiting pretty good student athletes, retaining and graduating many and advancing to the NCAA Tournament annually. We'd all like more wins but not at the expense of the program's improved reputation and integrity.

Great post OK 04-bow by the way, Mick had a winning record vs. Brown.

Which makes him arguably the best basketball coach in SMU's history. 03-rotfl

By the way, SMU's loss vs. UCLA was all about a blown call. Rath, you need to provide a better example than that 03-nerner
