B1G Reups With ESPN -- ACC Network Announcement Coming? - Hallcity - 06-20-2016 08:40 AM
From Sports Business Journal:
ESPN will buy the second half of the Big Ten’s media rights package, ending months of speculation that the two were about to sever their 50-year relationship.
ESPN will pay an average of $190 million per year over six years for essentially half the conference’s media rights package, according to several sources close to the talks. Two months ago, Fox Sports agreed to take the other half of the package for an average of $240 million per year. CBS Sports also has told the conference that it will renew its basketball-only package for $10 million per year.
The six-year, $2.64 billion media rights haul represents a big win for the Big Ten Conference, of course, which will see its average media rights payout nearly triple when it takes effect next fall
I guess we can expect some announcement on the ACC network soon if ESPN was delaying an announcement until they concluded their negotiations with the B1G.
Count me in the group that says it doesn't matter how much TV money the B1G gets, it's not going to get them very far in football or basketball because they're demographically challenged.

But for the most part...I agree, I'm not as worried about the Big 10 gap as the SEC gap. I guess it's scary for some of the ACC if Maryland becomes a force, but for the most part the B1G and ACC don't compete that much. The most threatening B1G teams, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State, already had massive resource advantages.

I think "about what we expected." Fox is getting the CCG, plus a slightly higher priority of games, which is what will account for the $50 million/year difference in rights between Fox and ESPN. I'm guessing ESPN is extremely pleased with the outcome. They got roughly 1/2 the B1G rights, which is what they expected, and didn't overpay.

I'm struggling with the math here. Those three new contracts are for a total of about $32 million a year per school. That's serious money, but is it three times what they are currently getting?

Everything that the ACC can monetize is already under ESPN's control and is being monetized by ESPN. The only other thing we have control over is each individual school can monetize their multi media rights (websites, local advertising etc...). Multi media rights can be worth millions per year, depending on the school and its influence in the markets in its state.

($240M Fox + $190M ESPN + $10M CBS) / (14 teams + 1 B1G) = $440M/15 = $29.3M/team
I expected more like $27M/team, so in my mind this is a win for them.
Not sure where people are getting $31M unless they expect Jim Delaney to work for nothing?

BTW, I analyzed this in some detail on my blog today. Here are my conclusions:
How does this affect the ACC?
1. Fewer B1G games on the Mouse (from 4.75/week down to 1.9) potentially means more and better slots for ACC teams - in particular, there should be fewer ESPN3 games next season.
2. If we assume 80% of the $430 million paid by Fox and ESPN is for football, that sets a per game price of $6.88 million each! With the ACC possibly facing a contract extension in conjunction with a cable network, that means the league can - and should - expect a big pay raise to go with it! (IMPORTANT: you get what you negotiate for, so it's imperative that the ACC settle for no less than $6.88 million for every game added to the existing contract!)
BOTTOM LINE: I predicted Fox + ESPN would pay about $400 million, so this is a little more than I expected (about $2 million/team/year more). I thought the ACC would trail by $5 million per year, but it looks more like $7 million now. When combined with BTN revenues, this should also push the B1G ahead of the SEC in terms of revenue. Now it's up to the ACC to play some catch-up!

CORRECT. Funny how people always seem to include this when calculating ACC shares but suddenly forget it when computing shares for other conferences. It's the same everywhere, folks!

I've thought for a while that this was going to stabilize with the Big 10 around $40M or low $40s per team, the SEC high $30s, and the rest in the low $30s.
Some things obviously still need to happen, but I think that's going to be about the gap, $10M to the B1G, $5-7M to the SEC. Meaningful, but not enough to cause mass movement.
Now, with the B1G opening it up again in six years, that's going to be the one to watch. With everyone else still on a contract they have the chance to jump way ahead. But if that happens, that may just have the effect of resetting the market for the PAC, B1G and ACC. Are you going to get a Big 12 or ACC team to jump, when they're just a couple years away from their new contract? Interesting.

Lou, the B1G is already getting a good $2+ million per game more than the ACC did the last time it renegotiated (and WAY more than the B1G got the last time for them), so I have to think this already reset the market somewhat. Now, it's my hope that when/if the ACC agrees to a contract extension, this will be the new price. If Swofford & co. can't get that much at least (i.e. $6.88 M/tier one game) then they should hold off, IMO.

That contract is so ridiculously under market ($55 million/year for the top SEC game every week, a feature prime time game, and the SEC CCG), the SEC can look for a big bump in 2025. Like the next B1G deal, this may help set the market for others.

The contract provides "look-ins" in Years 5 and 10 for additional revenue opportunities such as an ACC channel.
