Welsh-Ryan Arena - 3 points - huskie1stdown - 06-18-2016 11:44 PM

1. That is a crap load of money to rehab an arena.
2. If NIU had that kind of money we would be talking platinum Master plan.
3. If they can announce that does NIU really need to hold off making announcements about the Master plan?

RE: Welsh-Ryan Arena - 3 points - Stay Cool - 06-18-2016 11:49 PM

Depending on how much of the master plan money is being kept hush hush, we might have to keep it under wraps for now...

Not sure, but isn't Northwestern a private institution? Maybe the state's financial situation doesn't really impact them in the same way?

Truth. Private schools don't deal with public school issues. Plus a good chunk of their alumni are killing it financially. There's a reason people pay big bucks to get an education from there.

NIU can't even afford to fix the terrible video board at the convo. That video board should be the first thing fixed and that arena should have tons of events going on there. I'am surprised Northwestern would put that much money to rehab and make the place smaller. If you can get that much for a rehab then just build a new arena. The convo is a Big10, Big12, Pac10, SEC worthy arena!

Doesn't the convo have a lot of events? I get emails about events going on there, but haven't been to any. I agree though, that video board needs to be replaced yesterday.

There is always room for more. Know that you can get booze there you should be able to get many more concerts. I guess it's just hard to believe anything is going to happen at Huskie Stadium when you can't even afford to fix the convo video board!

The PA system stop working during Huntley High School graduation ceremony at the Convo. Never figured out how to turn back on. How embarrassing.

RE: Welsh-Ryan Arena - 3 points - NIUfilmmaker - 06-19-2016 11:21 AM

With that kind of money I'm sure it will improve a ton. Having said that, those are not good bones on that building, awkward for fan seating arrangement, it should be a tear down.

RE: Welsh-Ryan Arena - 3 points - Stay Cool - 06-19-2016 12:58 PM

The convo needs the video board replaced and a proper beer garden. I've heard rumors the latter is getting a serious look because of all the concerts that take place there

That horrible video board and PA system really need a good upgrade. It's tough to not be able to see and hear.

RE: Welsh-Ryan Arena - 3 points - dekalb222 - 06-19-2016 01:52 PM

Sound was fixed. The video board needs it asap! They need to find a way to get it fixed before basketball starts. If you want more fans you need to create a better atmosphere and the video board hurts that goal.

RE: Welsh-Ryan Arena - 3 points - 7huskie6 - 06-19-2016 03:23 PM

The sound still needs a lot of work. Frazier said more work is coming.

Put it up behind one of the endzone lower bleachers. You'll never need the higher ones except for graduation.

I already pitched the beer garden in the EndZone opposite students to STF and Tim Rice. I expect it happens this year. I would charge 5-10 dollars for entry and have free pizza, and cash bar for beer and mixed drinks. You can get a pizza place to donate pizza by putting up some banners and name on crappy scoreboard. I would make it very big and fenced in. I would have a few big screen tv's with other games on and one with the Huskie game on. I would open 2-2.5 hours before the game and close 30-60 minutes after it ends.

Everything I've heard points to it happening as well

I meant to say I would charge 5-10 dollars and have free pizza in the beer garden.

Its so sad how poorly the Convo was planned out.

RE: Welsh-Ryan Arena - 3 points - huskiealum03 - 06-20-2016 11:12 AM

NU is undergoing a ton of construction including their football practice facility (400k Square Feet), and the arena...they have quite the endowment
