Podcast: David Teel on the ACC's 9 game schedule & ACCN update - Villecard - 06-17-2016 08:23 AM

Nothing earth shattering, but David firmly believes the ACCN will happen and is also confident in the 9-game schedule. He specifically mentions Clemson fans not liking it as well....
You can listen to it HERE

Gotta love the ACC making football changes the football schools don't want so non football schools can make more money while football schools net less due to loss of some home games.

Great game plan. FSU is rudderless at the AD position so you won't hear anything from there, but I wonder if Clemson will ever sack up and push back.

NETS less. IE, this is a great move to reward Wake, BC, etc with more money at the expense of football schools who don't want this.

So the football schools get LESS profit, even though they bring in more. Standard ACC.

FYI estimates it brings in $4-$8 million from home games.

Basically you are only talking FSU and Clemson.

Now GT and Louisville have their annual in-state games as well so this limits their flexibility when you have ND in the rotation.

nole, are you opposed to the 9 game schedule for other conferences as well? Would you like to see the Big12, Pac12, and B1G move back to 8 game conference play?

Don't care about other conferences. When we all have the same revenue sharing then it will matter.

Disadvantaging the football schools in the ACC is a bad game plan....but standard operating procedure.

Seems like if it's a disadvantage to the football schools in one conference, then it would be a disadvantage to the football teams of all conferences.

He said that he expects it to happen and that an announcement/final decision will be made before the end of the year.

Can't help but think about something Don Draper said on Mad Men when I hear stuff about a network announcement coming by the end of the year when there's still half of one to go just about, and that this topic has been going on now for at least a year or more: "six months means never."

Good job, ESPN, making it to the end of another FY without this getting done for the ACC. It's another year they have to wait.

But, if it's true, that it's a done deal but will be crickets until year-end, goes to show how poorly folks are on both sides with marketing this stuff. Wouldn't you want to get ahead of this so that your network can be different and maybe better than others'?

Thats funny because football schools like OSU, UM, USC, Oregon, Texas, OU all play a 9 game conference schedule and they aren't losing money.

Teel said by the end of the year; it could be sooner. He offered up a great explanation as to why he feels the ACCN is coming.

Yes, because those are all the exact same situation.

Sure........if they all had the same TV contracts, all had the same % of dead weight in conference, similar alumni sizes, etc.

But they aren't all they same...are they?

RE: Podcast: David Teel on the ACC's 9 game schedule & ACCN update - Hokie Mark - 06-17-2016 10:22 AM

A 9-game conference schedule is a bad idea for ALL conferences, but the comparison is not apples-to-apples. That's because the Big Ten only has one annual non-conference rivalry game (Iowa vs. Iowa State), the Big XII has zero, the Pac-12 has zero*, but the ACC and SEC have FOUR. Not coincidentally, those are also the two conferences which play an 8-game schedule.

* Yes, I realize there are two Pac-12 teams which play Notre Dame annually, but if you want to go there then you have to factor in five ACC teams also play N.D. every year.

FYI estimates it brings in $4-$8 million from home games.

If you schedule creatively you'll only lose 1 home game over a 5 year period with 8 home games from time to time.

So let's divide that even that over estimate of 8 Million by 5.

FSU loses 1.2 million a year over the lost game but, gains a low estimate 3 Million on an ACC Network.

So by your logic FSU making more 1.8 Million a year is bad. Got it. I'm even giving you the conservative estimate. In fact FSU will probably make 2-4 Million more per year with a 9 game schedule.

You can still get a quality OOC opponent some years. Not every year, you do lose flexibility, but it can be done.

So schools who have smaller crowds, football booster bases actually NET more money than the schools bringing in the $$$. Bad business plan.

Plus, and more importantly, the football schools don't want it. It is crazy that non football schools are dictating what football schools must do in football.

ACC as a conference is dysfunctional due to cultures being too different. It is only held together by force right now (different forces). This is one more example of this dysfunction.

Your argument was about money. Are you now trying to make another argument that has nothing to do with the 9 game schedule?
