Kind of funny they say this when Gill never played in the NCHC.
Three more alumni of NCHC teams claimed the Kelly Cup with the Allen Americans by virtue of winning the ECHL’s Playoff crown on Thursday, June 9, and once again Miami was represented, along with alums from Denver and Western Michigan. Captaining the Americans to their second straight Kelly Cup with a 4-2 series win over the Wheeling Nailers was former Miami forward Gary Steffes. Steffes played in all 24 ECHL Playoff games for Allen, racking up 18 points, while ranking second in the postseason with 13 goals, including one in the Cup-clinching game. As a RedHawk, Steffes appeared in 136 games from 2006-10 while totaling 48 points.
Minding the net on the way to the Americans’ second straight Kelly Cup crown was former Western Michigan goaltender Riley Gill. Gill, who also won the Kelly Cup last year with Allen and in 2013 with Reading, played in 19 playoff games this season, while posting a record of 12-5 with a 2.35 GAA and a .923 save percentage. His 12 wins led the ECHL in the postseason while he ranked in the top five in GAA and save percentage. Gill made 42 saves in the clinching game June 9 in a 4-2 victory as he was named the game’s second star. At WMU, Gill appeared in 111 games in goal from 2006-10, racking up 39 wins with a 2.94 GAA and a .915 career save percentage.
The third alumnus to lift the Kelly Cup was former Denver captain David Makowski, who played his final season with the Pioneers in the NCHC’s inaugural 2013-14 season. Makowski, who played for the runner-up Nailers in his first pro season (2014-15), was fourth on the Americans with 20 points in 18 playoff games this year, including five goals. At Denver, Makowski played in 142 career games from 2010-14, racking up 93 points, while also guiding DU to the inaugural NCHC Frozen Faceoff title.
Coaching the Americans to their second straight Kelly Cup and fourth straight professional title (two in the now-defunct Central Hockey League) was 1981 St. Cloud State alumnus Steve Martinson, who played two seasons for the Huskies.
