Becky Wade and Lennie Waite - WRCisforgotten79 - 06-11-2016 05:59 PM

Tonight, Becky Wade will race the 10K in Portland (Lewis & Clark College), trying to run fast enough to qualify for the Olympic Trials.

Tomorrow, at the same meet, Lennie Waite will race the steeplechase, needing to run 9:45.00 or better to clinch a spot on the British Olympic team (after the formalities of their trials next month).

RE: Becky Wade and Lennie Waite - seniorowl - 06-11-2016 10:54 PM

Jeez. Galen Rupp ran a 12:58 in the 5k. So fast.

I wish. That is her seed time. The steeplechase is on Sunday.

RE: Becky Wade and Lennie Waite - WRCisforgotten79 - 06-11-2016 11:26 PM

Becky was not able to improve her time - running just under 33 minutes.

RE: Becky Wade and Lennie Waite - seniorowl - 06-12-2016 07:55 AM

Oops. my bad.

RE: Becky Wade and Lennie Waite - WRCisforgotten79 - 06-12-2016 09:03 PM

Lennie destroys her old lifetime best, running 9:35.91!!

Congrats. So she'll be in the Olympics for sure then?

She has satisfied one tangible criterion - running the Olympic standard (9:45.00) TWICE since May 1, 2015. She now has to go to the British Olympic Trials to demonstrate her fitness. Then, a committee will make the final decision some time in July. But, the biggest "barrier" (a steeplechase joke) was hitting that time.

Nice story on Waite prior to this week's British Olympic Trials.

Tonight, in Portland, Becky Wade will make a final attempt to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the steeplechase.

What's that? You thought she had done so in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago? True, on June 4, she ran 9:52.62, under the 9:53.00 standard. But this Monday, Becky just happened to be looking at the list of qualifiers on the USATF website, and beside her name, it said "NOT QUALIFIED". It turns out that her time did not count because the Atlanta track did not have a metal railing on the inside of lane 1 - just cones. She ran the same distance, but this obscure rule eliminated her time.

And, NO ONE FROM USATF BOTHERED TO TELL HER. She just happened to check the list. So, she had to scramble to buy a last minute ticket, interrupt her training, and head to Portland.

Here is an article on the situation.

Wow. That's gotta be infuriating.

"Dear Becky:

Sorry about the mix-up with your time. Also, we're sorry we forgot to tell you that your perfectly legitimate time is being ignored by your sports governing body. If you don't make a qualifying time tonight...have a nice four years.

Your friends at USATF."

What an absolute travesty. There's is a real problem with a governing body that would do this. This is disgusting.

I'm sure we'll soon learn that the USATF officials graduated summa *** stupid from the same stellar sports-management programs as the USGA rules honchos and CWS umpires.

USATF has a credibility gap, if for nothing more than having twice suspended drug cheat (Dennis Mitchell) coaching the USA relay teams. Glass houses, etc.

USATF has a huge relationship problem with the rank and file athletes it purportedly is supposed to represent. In many cases, they seem to just make it up as they go, and apply rules inconsistently. This is a maddening article to read a couple of years ago.

Seems like the disconnects are still there.

Justin Gatlin has been in violation of drug rules more than once, but he'll be in Eugene. But, run on a track without rails? We don't want you!
