Chesney - Buc66 - 05-31-2016 08:13 PM

Is there some sort of a message here for ETSU folks on the return home of Chesney, as the co-chair of the ETSU stadium fund raising campaign, as the headline for the "world's largest tailgate party"? Plus, where's Phil Fulmer these days? Isn't he the one who got Chesney's name attached to the ETSU stadium campaign?

I doubt ETSU will see a penny from this concert. I don't think that Chesney has much of a connection to ETSU or interest in the football program. Last year WJHL did a freedom of information act for correspondence between Chesney and ETSU. The correspondence was basically a couple of text messages.

You mean besides being listed on the etsustadium.com website as co-chair of the fundraising effort?

You may be right about the concert but I doubt if he doesn't do something for the football team. The rumor was he offered up some money in 2003 to try and keep the football team going so I would assume he would still want to help out in some way.

As for the correspondence; you are assuming that all communication went through work phones. I doubt that is the case.

Wishful thinking here but hopefully he is trying to get a few more donors to complete the last phase of the stadium. Maybe I'm dreaming but I feel like it bodes well that most of the stadium is funded and the stadium and field do not have names yet.

Yes he is listed as co-chair. And I hope that he has done something to help the process. I just don't think his picture, a short quote, and a tweet of him wearing a hat are very useful, and that is the only visible involvement that Chesney has had. At least Mike Smith shows up to basketball games, talks to the morning monster sometimes, etc.

Just having his name attached is a big deal. Look at this list of entertainers and see if any of them are lending any kind of support for their school: http://www.forbes.com/sites/hughmcintyre/2016/01/12/these-were-the-highest-grossing-tours-of-2015/

Again, the rumor always was that in 2003 he offered to give money to keep the program afloat. He has become an even bigger star since then.

I swear I feel like I have to be a sunshine pumper on here because of all the George McFly's on this board. Legion of the miserable.

Its all about perspective. As i've said before, I am the biggest supporter of ETSU athletics that I know, but some on here are simply naive. I suppose that having a name attached to something is of some importance. But what we really need is money. It would be great if Chesney could raise some money since he is the co-chair of the fundraising. Even better, what we need is a broader base of support in the community. THAT is really where Chesney could be of some value. The only people who are going to that website are those who support ETSU athletics already. A radio advertisement that takes 2 minutes of Chesney's time, a 30 second TV spot for businesses who happen to support ETSU athletics like Fulmer did last year, a public donation of the concert proceeds to ETSU athletics, or even a mention of ETSU athletics at the concert itself could all be much more useful than his picture on a website.

It is what it is and will continue to be ---- ETSU coming into BMS a week after its stadium fund raising co-chair star has come and gone at said venue with the money from the 45,000 ticket sales, or with others hauling the money. Not that ETSU should get nor expect a dime from this UT vs Va Tech concert and game, but for its stadium fundraising country super-star co-chair to be so near the new stadium under construction that he's signed on to "market" for an unrelated event the week prior is just plain weird and strange -- maybe it's just one of those NE Tennessee mountain culture things?

Maybe Kenny will do something to help promote ETSU football while he's here for the UT game, but I really doubt he does. He seems to be a Vol fan only.

Not according to the Vol message boards. He gets crucified for wearing Gator gear at his concerts in Florida, Crimson Tide hats in Alabama, and so on.

If his flight is delayed, maybe Fulmer will drive him over to have his photo made atop a bulldozer.
