OT - Tom Herman speech today at the Rotary Club - per Joseph Duarte - Orange County Owl - 05-12-2016 03:40 PM

This sounds more fun than being satisfied with a bowl game, but then again that's just me. I support JK's vision of a Top 25 program with no excuses (and in our case, I think the reference below to "investing" extends to an institutional level).

Joseph Duarte ‏@Joseph_Duarte · 1h1 hour ago  Houston, TX
Herman: 'In order to pay that price you've got to be willing 2 invest. There's a price for 9-win seasons & prices for 8, 7-, 6-win seasons.'

Joseph Duarte ‏@Joseph_Duarte · 1h1 hour ago  Houston, TX
Herman (cont.): 'Those prices are a lot easier to pay. And if you're satisfied w/ going 7-5 and going to Poulan Weedeater Bowl then great.'

Joseph Duarte ‏@Joseph_Duarte · 1h1 hour ago  Houston, TX
Tom Herman (cont.): 'Then you're in the wrong program and we'll find a place for you to go.'

Tom Herman ended with 'We are into building championships l.'

They had 1 good year. Credit them for stepping up the resources (appropriately is another question) to get them that but let's not act like the last time we played UH we didn't belong on the same field. Herman will leave after this season then we will see where they go. If they get to the Big 12 because of this then I will say we are worlds apart.

I'm surprised he will settle for 9 win seasons. I guess we have found the level of mediocrity he is comfortable with.

Mr. Herman,

I've been a Houstonian a hell of a lot longer than you will ever be. Don't preach to me about the requirements of being a "true Houstonian". Good luck at your next dream job.

Sincerely,

Born, raised and here since 1955

P.S. And I do have 4 season tickets to my hometown Rice Owls.

Hopefully we belong on the same field as them when we play them in 2017. We sure wouldn't have last year; hopefully this year brings us a little closer.

Been going to Rice games since around 1960. First UH game I went to was in 1962. I will watch UH when on television since I am a UH Law grad but my season ticket and BA is Rice and I consider that true Houstonian.

I agree with the part about it not being worth it to go 7-5 and to the Weedeater Bowl. The benefits in college football are getting more concentrated at the top and the costs are not that much less at the bottom. Welch at GE had a rule about getting rid of ventures that could not make the top 2 in the industry.

Kinda sums up college football:

"I deserve to be paid $4 million per year because my team won 13 games last year. If you don't want to pay me that, I'll go somewhere else."

One good year? They were 13-1 just a few years ago. They had Briles and Sumlin before Herman. They built a new stadium. They've been on an upward trajectory for a decade while we've stagnated from a low base.

Just a few years ago when I was at Rice we were 2-2 against UH. The last game we played UH at Reliant we were driving to win the game and couldn't convert on 4th down. We will see how we do next year.

Ok they built a new stadium because their old HS stadium didn't work anymore. They charged their students for it. They went way over the budget. They made a great coaching hire (former Rice coach) and had a better year than we've had since the 50's BUT they are still and afterthought to the rest of the country. And they will be unless they get added to the Big 12.

Prediction: Sumlin goes 7-5 at A&M. Sumlin gets fired. Herman goes to A&M after going 10-2 on the year.

They made multiple good coaching hires. And the bad one they fired after going 8-5 then 8-5. They're in the conversation and we're not. No way I can sugar-coat that.

Agreed. And as for them being an afterthought- I am not in Houston and see something new about UH every day. Check out ESPN.com today.

We are an afterthought IN OUR OWN CITY

Just because we say it here and repeat it enough doesn't make it true.

While I also find it hard to believe, I was recently (within the last 30 days) told by an athletic director at another Texas school that he has heard from a Big 12 AD that (i) the Big 12 is definitely expanding and (ii) the two frontrunners are Memphis and...wait for it...Rice. I told him that I was doubtful of the accuracy of that information.

I'm not trying to make us all feel old here, but the time frame that you are referencing was in the 1990's/very early 2000's, right? More than "just a few years ago".

No, we won in '08 and '10 and they won in '09 and '11. We should've run up the score in '08 like they tend to do. They won in '12 and '13 too but we had a chance in 2013 to score late and win after that beautiful onsides kick by Boz.

Bailiff's record against UH: 2-5

And if you want to put the 2-2 record in there, the recent losing streak is 0-3.

I highly doubt it too - but I had been thinking the other day that an interesting strategy could be to add Rice and another smallish academic school to (a) improve the academics of the conference and (b) use its leverage to put the new members on a "2nd Tier" revenue level so that it really doesn't affect the existing 10 members' revenues. Kind of a "have your cake (expansion) and eat it (revenue) too" approach.

Admit it - whatever they would agree to pay Rice to be the conference "patsie" (well, in football anyway) would be more than the CUSA share Rice is receiving now. Their gate will always be generally good in Houston. BYU and Cincinnati will take $$ share away from the other members unless the sum of the parts with a Big12 network is greater than it is now. And to most of the existing members, they'd view Rice as just another "W" in lieu of one of their normally weak OOC games.

Shockingly we have never had a 4 year span with a >.500 record against UH in football. Which means we have never either had a 3 game win streak or not lost to UH two games in a row. We have had plenty of 3+ lose streaks though.

The best stretch we had was a six game stretch from '93-'01 where we won 4 of the 6 games we played.
