I'm starting to think the BYU-Colorado State tandem has a real chance of being chosen.

Here are some interesting statistics about combined statistical areas:

CSA/CSA Rank/2015 Population/Population Change from 2010

Denver-Aurora/16th/3.419 million/+10.61%
Salt Lake City-Provo-Orem/23rd/2.468 million/+8.63%
Cincinnati-Wilmington-Maysville/28th/2.217 million/+1.96%
Hartford-West Hartford/37th/1.483 million/-0.22%
Memphis-Forrest City/41st/1.371 million/+1.30%

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combined_statistical_area#List_of_combined_statistical_areas

The combined population of the Denver and Salt Lake City CSAs is more than 50% larger than the combined population of the Cincinnati and Hartford or Cincinnati and Memphis CSAs. And the difference in growth rates is eye-catching.

Of course it's not just about population -- if so Houston would be a slam-dunk for an invitation -- but the Big 12 already (mostly) owns the Texas market. The question is, does the Big 12 want to take on the Big 10 in Ohio and the Northeast, or does it want to take on the Pac-12 in Colorado and Utah? I'm thinking it's better to take on the Pac-12, especially given the historical rivalries between Colorado and Colorado State and between Utah and BYU, which have the potential to draw substantial fan attention if they become P5-level rivalries. I don't see rivalries between Ohio State and Cincinnati or between Rutgers and UConn having the same potential for generating TV ratings.

As for Colorado State not being "P5 worthy", the school does have a few things in its favor. Academics is strong -- Colorado State is a top-level research university -- and the school is building a brand new on-campus stadium. It's true that Colorado State's football attendance isn't impressive, having averaged just 25K in 2015, but Kansas averaged only 27K. Put the Rams in the Big 12 and they would probably sell out their new 36K-seat home.

This is no more worthy then any other article that has been posted, not sure why it deserves its own thread.

Because its the first time Colorado State has been seriously mentioned.

It sounds like the thinking is most likely expand East or West but not both.

I don't buy it. UC is far and away the favorite for recruiting purposes. Maybe you leave out BYU if you don't want a hybrid school, but then it wouldn't make sense to take CSU to begin with. Memphis and Houston are better fits.

Interesting. I wonder who on here first suggested them as a logical combo, since Air Force didn't want to step up?

Also sticks it to CU as a bonus. CSU will become the better program in that state.

So a reporter's speculation = 'serious' mention?

Because Chuck Carlton lives in the same city as Bob Bowlsby?
Because Chuck Carlton has UT sources?

This feels legit.

Please let it be BYU and Colo St!

1. Preserve the American
2. Tick off the Pac 12 who may retailiate by invading Texas

I guess the question is what does Texas want from the BIG 12 so that Texas does not leave the Big12?

If the choice is to give up the LHN and expand the Big12 into a giant conference by taking Cincy, Memphis and Uconn, then why wouldn't Texas instead just join a conference with Ohio St, Penn St, and Mich instead. Especially since Texas could take Oklahoma with them and be reunited with Nebraska.

Now if the choice was BYU/CSU or the Pac-12, that's not so clear cut.

No sources claimed.

How about BYU/CSU with UT going Indy? You can also bring in Houston in that case to make up for the Texas base, if UT leaves with, say ND in the ACC.

At that point, the Big 12 will also be losing OU and KU to the B1G, so you'd have to make up two additional schools, plug in UC and.... Memphis? UConn? Boise St (football only)?

At that point, you have to weaken both the MWC and the AAC, but undoubtedly the Sugar will cut ties with the Big 12 after the current contract, if they lose their Big 3 programs.

You have to keep UT and OU happy, one way or another. I don't think adding BYU football plus another school accomplishes that alone.

My solution would be to add UC, go to an 8 game schedule, and have a CCG for 1/2 if necessary (equal conference record, head to head not applicable as head to head is rarely ever at a neutral site other than OU/UT. Or if 1/2 teams didn't meet during regular season). In the event of a three way tie, use a tie breaker to eliminate the third team.

It might actually make sense if the Big 12 expanded with BYU, Colorado state, Houston, and New Mexico. It would suck for WVU. But the Big 12 could use a big chunk of the map for perception.

RE: Dallas News: Top 4 for expansion: Col State, Cincy, BYU, UConn - RUScarlets - 05-08-2016 08:01 AM

Or Boise/BYU football only, UC, CSU full time. UC/CSU don't really give you football beef. Boise/BYU actually gives you a legit West division, paired up with OU and/or UT/TTech.

Colorado State? What does their individual profile contain? I don't know much about them since I never looked at them in any detail. Academic standing? TV market? Number of alumni? How big is the stadium? Do they have a passionate following? etc.

I don't really have a dog in the hunt and honestly don't care but Chuck Carlton is a respected Big 12 reporter

I tend to agree, odds are better B12 does nothing rather than something. I doubt the west move. TV$$$ is to the east. and this is all about TV$$.

Colo St is building a new $220M, 36K seat football stadium.

Fort Collins is 65 miles north of Denver, and a lot of Colo St alums live in Denver. If they are being considered, Denver is the driver.

Colo St is one of the more academically respected schools in the MWC, along with Hawaii, New Mexico, SD State and Air Force.

Aside from Sonny Lubick's hey day (1994-2002), the football history sucks. McElwain had one great year and left immediately.

In terms of fan financial support, the USAToday database suggests that Colo St's ticket sales + alumni donations ($7.7M) are way behind the leaders in the MWC and American.

Big 14 take them all to match the SEC, ACC, and big 10.

North: OU, Ok state, KU, K state, Io state, Co state, BYU
South: Texas, Tex Tech, TCU, Baylor, Cincy, WVU, UConn

IF texas or OU ever left down the road the big 14 would be still be very viable

RE: Dallas News: Top 4 for expansion: Col State, Cincy, BYU, UConn - Wilkie01 - 05-08-2016 10:22 AM

The Big 12 could add all four and go to 14 teams.

Big 14 North
Connecticut
West Virginia
Cincinnati
Iowa State
Kansas
Kansas State
Colorado Sate

Big 14 South
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
Texas
Texas Tech
TCU
Baylor
BYU
