It does raise a question. As an 18-20 year old kid is making a decision as to what to major in... why would they pick brewing if they are (theoretically) too young to drink?

Most likely the classes directly related to brewing wouldn't start until Jr and Sr year. They introduced a history of beer in 2006ish and you had be at least a Jr with a 3.0 GPA to take it. They brewed beer in that class.

What's the brewing scene like near WKU? Right now in Norfolk we've got 5 breweries up and running (3 opened in the past year), with 4 more that should open up in the next year or so. We're also trying to get a micro-distillery into Norfolk at some point. Virginia Beach, Hampton and Chesapeake have a good number of breweries/distilleries as well.

Corsair is basically the best craft distillery in the US, and it started in Bowling Green. Probably the only thing Bowling Green has ever contributed to society. :)

Bowling Green is home to White Squirrel Brewery.

That's about it for BG but Louisville has around 10-15 and Lexington has a handful.

I imagine the ever-changing Macro/Micro brewery dynamic will affect the demand for these types of programs.

I'm in that class now. I really enjoy it. Drinking beer every Monday afternoon as part of a class sure is nice.

Plus the class will only get better with the addition of the WKU-Alltech brewery in the research center. Classes are getting moved there. The brewery is the largest university brewery in the world.

Great.....because there aren't enough douchebags out there insisting that their home brew is "so much better than what you would get in the stores" (it isn't). Now, they're going to be able to actually say, "I studied brewing."

This sounds like great fun, and I would have taken a class for sure. For me, beer was more of an independent study effort in college.

There is no question that brewing is a big business these days, but from the perspective of a student graduating with this degree what are the job prospects and salaries like? More than ever before, I think people need to look at the return they get back from their investment in college and I hope people do not go into this for the fun only to end up tending bar at Appleby's.
