3 year ban on creation of new bowls - BullsFanInTX - 04-11-2016 10:04 AM

The NCAA has approved a three-year moratorium on the creation of new bowl games, meaning no additional postseason games will be added until 2019 at the earliest, one applicant for a new bowl confirmed to CBS Sports.

ESPN first reported the decision, which comes after three 5-7 teams were placed in bowls last season as there weren't enough eligible teams to fill all 80 slots for the 40 approved bowls. There were so many bowl games last season that the Mountain West Conference even played itself in one game, causing its commissioner to declare the bowl system "broken."

Three cities had been eyeing future bowls: Austin, Texas, and Charleston, South Carolina, for 2016; and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for a future date. Those plans now are on hold.

Finally someone makes a good decision. No reason 5-7 teams should be going to bowls. I have a hard time justifying 6-6 teams going. It is like a participation award at this point. No incentive to reward only the good teams.

Glad to see it. Still I wish the NCAA would say NO five win teams ever! Even as a P5 fan, I will admit the P5 created this mess by having 70%+ of a conference tied into a bowl. That forced the G5 to rightly create their own tie-ins bowls which caused this mess. P5 needs to look in the mirror at who is to blame.

why? I don't see the harm...didn't all three 5-7 teams win?

so they're actually 6-7 teams...

It actually has much more to do with most P5 teams playing cakewalk non-conf games at home...which helps many P5 teams go 4-0 or 3-1 at worst in non-conf play...which means most teams only have to win just 2 or 3 conf games to go bowling.

Multiple P5 teams have gone 2-6 in conf play yet still went bowling because of joke non-conf schedules.

THAT's why so many teams from P5 teams go bowling.

That pretty much ends Austin's bowl hopes. They should have started last year when they had the chance.

Well, as a P5/PAC and P6/AAC fan, I think is great. No 5-7 teams should ever go bowling or been on the same field with real competitors.

yet no one can explain why...and all 3 won...

Guess we're stuck with our current 8-9 bowls a year lineup.

The P5 conferences need to step up and say because we get 90% of the money our teams need to held to a higher standard. So each P5 team must have at least have 7 wins to qualify for bowls. That would open up some mid major bowls for the G5 schools that are getting screwed and cheated out of money by the P5 leagues. Just a thought

Ya apparently techmo bowl is banned too, for using the word bowl in a football game.

They P5 take all the decent bowl spots for marginal teams. They get more TV money because they are in conferences with Ohio State Alabama, UCLA etc so they should be held to a higher standard. If you don't understand that you might be on drugs

A good decision was made, shocking so out of character.
