Quinnipiac and North Dakota advance in the Frozen Four - Championship on Saturday - NoDak - 04-07-2016 11:13 PM

The Q over BC 3-2. Quinnipiac goes for its first national championship and has been a blueprint in how to build a hockey program.

UND over Denver 4-2. UND had lost their last six national semifinals. Going for its eighth natty's on Saturday.

The Q and the Sue's. It's going down for real.

The win against Denver was payback for their regional final win against us when we had one of our strongest teams ever with Jonathon Toews, Zach Parise, and TJ Oshie. Denver's goalie stood on his head all game and shut us out.

I remember watching a few years ago when Minnesota-Duluth beat Michigan in overtime for the national championship. Great game.

Quinnipiac played Yale for the title last year, glad to see them returning so soon

With Notre Dame moving to the Big 10, would Quinnipiac be the ideal replacement for the Irish in Hockey East? On the surface the Connecticut school seems ideally suited for such a move. However, there's obviously more to the decision than just geography and the on ice quality of program.

That was actually all the way back in 2013. Time flies by it seems. Last year, Providence beat BU.

The Q seems to like playing the Ivy's in the ECAC and there is the thought that it doesn't want to leave, for the academic prestige alone. But it has the capability to perform highly in HE.

Holy Cross has been mentioned, as it has moved a number of its games to the big arena in Worcester. Bentley is building a new arena, so it could be a dark horse pick.

Holy Cross could be a good fit. However, a giant NO THANKS to Bentley, though!

Very likely. While Quinnipiac doesn't give them a new media market, that doesn't seem to be a big consideration for hockey. Great facilities, good school, and good athletic program generally. Atlantic Hockey doesn't have much worth poaching, now that they took UConn. Out of ECAC Hockey, the Ivies won't budge and Colgate, Clarkson, and St. Lawrence are pretty far away from New England. Union isn't that compelling since they can't offer scholarships, even though they've been good recently. That basically leaves RPI as the only other current option, but RPI values its association with the Ivies and its rivalries with Clarkson and Union. The Q is hungry for that next level. The Big Ten-induced enthusiasm for brand new programs at major-conference schools seems to have died down, so don't expect Syracuse to elevate their club team directly into a top league.

It was in 2013, not last year. Providence won the Natty last year.

Quiinipac vs North Dakota?

I think matchups like that put a hard, and low cap on the national appeal of the 'frozen four'.

With NoDak's talk over the past year about Cal State Bakersfield eventually joining the Big West, I'm rooting for the Q.

Take the championship, Quinnipiac!

So you seriously think there is national appeal in that matchup? 03-lmfao

Niche sport, niche audience, most of that audience will be watching, including me. Also North Dakota produces NHL stars, so yes, national appeal to a niche audience.

ESPN will put the Golden State game on tonight, so we are relegated to the deuce. That decision was made before BC lost.

For college hockey, we get good ratings on TV, much better than the Boston schools or even Michigan, but that's not saying much.

RE: Quinnipiac and North Dakota advance in the Frozen Four - Championship on Saturday - jdgaucho - 04-09-2016 03:49 PM

to be fair Golden State still has within reach a historic record. Otherwise the hockey championship would be on ESPN instead of the deuce.

And look at it another way. The men's soccer national championship was televised on ESPNU. the Deuce is a step up.

Sounds to me like that was his point. That a niche audience is college hockey's ceiling, and will continue to be until more recognizable brands emerge.
