Minimum range of 215 miles on the base model. 0-60 seconds in under 5 seconds on the base model. Auto-pilot standard on the base model.

$35,000.

The electric tax credits for Tesla will likely be exhausted by the time the Model 3 actually rolls off the factory lot, so anyone marketing a sub-$30,000 price point with tax credits is being overly optimistic, but it's a luxury car, designed to compete with the BMW 3 series, so even at $35,000, it isn't a bad price.

Tesla has gotten over 130,000 deposits in the last 24 hours, or more than $130,000,000 just from people that wanted to pre-order.

I'll be pre-ordering next month, if there's still availability. This "will" be in my garage come 2017.

I truly believe that ten years from now we'll look at last night like we now look at Steve Jobs when he announced the iPhone. Below is a lengthy but great read on the significance of Tesla and its potential effect on the world.

You have the power source? I think you need to switch to 240V.

I have confidence the Model 3 will be a huge success, but I have little confidence it will actually come out in 2017. Tesla has a history of missing deadlines.

Maybe after 3 car launches they have figured it out though. I read that the Model 3 is basically production ready now. Last night wasn't a prototype, it was essentially the ready to manufacture product. Maybe they'll make some small tweaks, but it doesn't seem like they'll be making any major changes.

It won't bother me if it misses the deadline. I'm in no rush. I'm confident if it is delayed it won't be by much. And when it comes to a car my family and I will be driving, I'd prefer they take all the time they need. I don't want first launch glitches because they tried to rush the product.

Coal is only about 30% of the energy mix now and has been steadily declining for years in favor of cheap natural gas.

one of the biggest projects in Memphis history is getting rid of our 1950s era 'dirty' coal plat, that pollutes Lake McKellar...and replacing it with a 900 million dollar TVA Natural Gas Plant that's over 30% more efficient, and doesn't pollute near as much.

Quote:Tennessee Valley Authority officials on Friday signed a $452 million contract with the contractor that will build a natural gas-fired generating facility to replace the aging Allen Fossil Plant in Memphis.

Kiewit Power Group Inc. of Lenexa, Kansas, will begin construction late this year or early next year on a site just south of the Allen facility in the Ensley Bottoms area of Southwest Memphis, TVA spokesman Chris Stanley said. Completion is set for June 2018.

Including the cost of combustion turbines and other equipment already purchased by TVA, the total price of the new plant is $975 million. Stanley said the construction will pump $233 million into the Memphis-area economy.

With a capacity to generate 1,070 megawatts, enough power for more than 580,000 homes, the natural gas plant will be a highly efficient combined-cycle facility. That means it will have combustion turbines generating power as they spin, but there also will be additional electricity produced from the hot exhaust gases.

That outlet is probably no more than 30 amps. While it would work, it could easily take over 12 hours per charge.

To get the charge time down, you would need something in the 50amp size. 50 amp wire is really expensive, so it helps to keep the wire run as short as possible. In other words, the further away from your panel the wire has to be run for the outlet, the more expensive its going to be. #6 50 amp 2 conductor wire will run about $1.50 per foot.

The panel is right next to the engine bay when I park the car in the garage. I'd probably only need a foot or two.

yep, it's a 3 prong 30 amp...if you back the car into the garage, it would be within 10 feet of the plug...he figured he could just use this to adapt the plug

If thats the case, I'd probably see what the highest amp charger was available, and wire it for that bad boy. I dont know if they make a 60 amp charger or not, but that would probably be sweet if they did. You wouldnt regret the small amount of extra expense, since your run is so short.

I'm pretty sure i read that the standard Tesla S power plant (they have an upgrade as well for more distance range) is 12 hours on a 30 amp. So yea, it would work, but charging for that amount of time would get old real quick. And if you dont fully charge every time, you wlil get to the point where the batteries constantly drain below 50%, and the battery life will be greatly reduced. And those batteries will set you back some coinage.

Wonder if that is going to start being standard in new higher end homes. 50 amp outlet in the garage.

Electric cars are pretty much an inevitability at this point. They'll start offering things like that as upgrades and they'll probably eventually be standard, just like USB plugins for cell phone charging are now pretty much standard in new home construction.
