Memphis agreement with Grizzlies depends on actual attendance - CougarRed - 02-13-2016 06:38 AM

According to this article, the Memphis Tigers announce 11,721 per home basketball game with an actual turnstile count of 5,889 butts in seats.

Memphis drew more than 10K butts in seats for years, but dropped below 10K to 7,127 actual attendance for the first time last year.

Apparently, Memphis gets paid by the Grizzlies depending on actual attendance: $800,000 per season if over 10K scaling down to $0 if less than 6K. If Memphis falls below 6K actual two years in a row, then the financial agreement is terminated.

The Memphis AD feels confident the Tigers will finish above 6K this season.

PS Obviously, UH would love to have 7,127 or 5,889 actual attendance for the season. Hopefully we'll get there by 2018-19 when the new Hofheinz opens.

Memphis has to stop the financial bleeding

Through 18 games, Memphis is averaging 5,889 fans a game. If the Tigers average fewer than 6,000 a game, they won’t get a penny of their negotiated $800,000 payment from the Griz.

Losing out on $800,000 is still cheaper than spending $10.6 Million (to fire Pastner) and another $10 Million - $15 Million to hire an EXPERIENCED HC this time around.

IDK why they dumped the Pyramid so soon, they still could have had their own home court. Now it's a Bass Pro Shop and if UM gets kicked out, where would they play?

First of all, the Grizz aren't going to kick out a tenant. They would just renegotiate the lease, perhaps.

Second, we have to fall under 6k 2 years running to trigger that clause. This year would only be the first.

Third, the 11k+ number is tickets sold, as opposed to actual attendance. We have a large number of season ticket holders who don't want to lose their seat assignments, but no longer bother to attend.

When Pastner leaves, that will turn around, with the pace determined by whom we hire and how well he starts out.

All I know is they had a legit 17k+ watching them play Cuse Dec 08. Great game, great facility...fire Pastner now before he totally kills off a once national elite program.

It's painful watching Memphis at tulane, the arena is small and somewhat empty.

It is definitely small, but it's in great shape, and I've been to several games that were standing-room only, and the place is incredible when it's full. We just need a watchable product...

What is the reasoning behind this? Do the Grizzlies get concessions/parking income from Memphis games, and therefore need a certain number of folks in the building to make it worthwhile for them?

i would gladly take Gtown, Nova, Butler, Creighton, XU, Marquette, SJU and Prov over 3/4 of this conference.

I would take SH over several teams in this conference as well.

I thought the Mid South was torn down?

I saw some fun shows in that place

Just get them to agree to less mandatory home games and things will get better (along with a new coach)

We will be fine once Pastner is gone. We are typically top 10 in attendance year in and year out.

It's a joke right now.
