UTSA QB to quit football - Doctors decsion to not clear for concussion - MWC Tex - 02-02-2016 01:14 PM

He will keep his scholarship though.

"As much as I love football, I respect the doctors' decision to end my career," Bogenschutz said in a press release Tuesday. "Despite my strong love and passion for the game, I have come to peace and realization that my health is more important than a game."

Will we see more of this? Would it happen more in the G5 ranks vs the P5 ranks?

If the NCAA had any spine, then every FBS team (and really, ever football team period) would have to contribute to a fund that would then pay for the head trainer on each team to be completely independent from the athletic dept. That way the trainers can't be pressured by the coach or AD to clear any player to play, just for the sake of winning, les risk being fired.

Cuse has last 4 or 5 players the last 2 seasons to this...it is a real and serious issue. Some schools are more conservative than others.

Agreed, but the NCAA needs to spend some of their billions on research and having a standard protocol in place first.

I think players are going to start quitting at increasing rates. At some point some high profile, household name player at the top of his game will quit- perhaps with only minor history of head trauma- and it will really cause a stir.

RE: UTSA QB to quit football - Doctors decsion to not clear for concussion - MplsBison - 02-03-2016 10:35 AM

Players should quit, or even I dare say, be forced to quit, once they've sustained enough cumulative damage.

But that doesn't mean football stops. Football will never stop. Only the rules will change, technology will change, training and recovery will change, etc.

If they have to roll new players in, then that's what they have to do.

TXMark, I'm not sure which billions you're referring to. The NCAA doesn't have anything to do with all the truckloads of money that major college football brings in. That's conferences and bowls.

They have a huge TV contract for March Madness, but they give most of that money back to the schools.

Neuroscience itself is still a very young field, and it's already getting plenty of federal funding. Certainly, I think there will be lots and lots to learn about neuro trauma. Particularly how it affects younger ones.

In a dream, it would great if there was some technology that could track and assess the cumulative neuro forces/stresses/impacts/trauma/damage sustained by players, and once a threshold is met, *poof* you're done.

Bison...the NCAA makes a boatload of $$$ off the Hoops Tourney.

Not billions (hyperbole on my part) but certainly millions

The money isnt coming from the ncaa but the School of polymer science at Southern Miss is doing alot of research on both football and military helmet materials and protective liners.

The sport has to and is going to change.

Quote:That's why dramatic change is needed from the lowest participation level on up in order to save football from itself. To reduce the number of blows absorbed by developing brains, a reasonable plan enacted by reasonable guardians would go something like this:

Outlaw tackling through eighth grade coast to coast. (Plenty of boys can have plenty of fun learning the game through the rules of flag football.) Spend freshman year in high school in full pads for practice-only drilling on the fundamentals of blocking and tackling conducted by coaches with proper training. Spend sophomore through senior years in full-contact junior varsity and varsity games and practices, giving players three years to attract interest from college programs if they so desire.

I have a cousin who played center for a DII team. He walked from football as a RS Freshmen after three serious concussions in under three years at his parents urging. He had a far brighter future as a perspective physical therapist than a DII football player so no reason to risk his health just to play a couple more years.

The game had to evolve at the turn of 20th century due to a rash of player deaths just like it will revolve now.

My son played tackle football from 5th grade through 8th and i'm glad he decided it was not what he wanted to do in HS. It's not only the games, he had practice 5-6 days a week starting the end of July, the entire month of August until their first game on Labor Day weekend. Not all of that was tackling and in pads of about half of it was. Thankfully youth football is based upon weight class.

The young man likely has a decent arm, he should consider baseball

Frog, I like that plan!

IMO, using "the helmet as a weapon" is a method/technique that is learned in youth football and those habits die hard.

Take their helmets away, until varsity high school.

I agree!

Maybe let them wear some sort of skull cap made out of leather for some protection as they enter 6th-9th grades.

Not anymore, at least not in any reputable youth league. Every one I know of has adopted the USA Football Heads Up program.

One of my friends had a son who started playing this past year. The only time they have helmets on is game time.

Both of my sons played football along with other sports. The only concussion either one suffered at any time came from basketball.

Well, sorry but my personal opinion is that kids should not be in a position to get those concussions in the first place.

Already know you're going to come back with "they can get a concussion on the playground, etc.". Save it.

Save it? Why? If you are truly concerned about protecting kids then you should be concerned abut where kids get them the most.

Quote:And while we often hear about head injuries in athletes, most concussions happen off the playing field — in car and bicycle accidents, in fights, and even minor falls.

Nope. Not going to debate. I have my opinion, and it is correct ... for me.

Your opinion is correct, for you.
