Just Curious ... "Is the AAC's Chance of New TV Contract Dying with the Bowl Season?" - TonyTiger - 12-24-2015 11:17 PM

What do you guys think ... "Are our chances of a new TV contract dying with the performances of some of our conference bowl game representatives?" or "Are you doubtful that it would matter anyway?"

I'm curious because early on there lots of comments about the initial TV contract for the AAC was only for a few years and that it could be renegotiated with good performance. The first year of the conference, the AAC won both the Men's & Women's NCAA Basketball Titles and the Fiesta Bowl Game. UConn has three straight women's national titles.

"Why aren't there any rumblings ... 07-coffee3?"

I don't think we worry about wins and losses. We worry about viewership.

What's wrong with Yul Brenner?

Ohh Snap ... "Yul Brenner did play PHAROAH IN THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, didn't he?"

It's cool. I wasn't feeling the remark. I guess I'd betta starting hoping that the BIG XII Biggies are interested, huh?

Bowl performance by conference has zero impact on tv contracts, or long-term perception.

Didn't help CUSA to go 4-1 last year and didn't hurt the B12 to go 2-5.

Let's put it this way; a lot of people are going to be off of work on the 30th, and they'll be watching Memphis-Auburn just like they were watching Memphis-Mississippi.

It's a great opportunity to remind people why Memphis is exciting to watch. And opportunities can be fleeting if not seized.

The fact that ESPN is not making as much money will have more impact than wins, losses and viewership.

Say what you will, but all of these losses certainly dont help. When the SEC West had a bad bowl season last year, it just dimmed their obvious luster. The AAC is in a different circumstance, hoping to show they are more like the P5 than the G5, and all of these losses are not helping with that.

Haha....no. It doesn't help, but all they all care about is numbers. This league succeeded.

The Magnificent Seven.

Okay, I gotcha ... 03-wink. I guess I got a little to accustom to all the praise about how good the AAC was in football this year ... 07-coffee3.

My thing is ... "Why are we waiting on ESPN to make an offer?" We've already proven that we can compete at the highest level in all three major sports (i.e., NCAA MBB, NCAA WBB, NCAA Football).

Why not entertain offers from Fox Sports, CBS Sports, or some other sports network? We've already begun to make a name for ourselves. The AAC receives less than both the Mountain West and the Big East (I.e., from another sports station) in terms of its TV package.

Ah...because the AAC already has a primary contract for multiple years with ESPN (secondary with CBSSports).

Did you think AAC wasn't under ANY contract?

Yes, but I thought that the AAC could opt out of the original contract after a few years. It's been three years, if my memory serves me correctly.

The league will loose exposure and become not as relevant if not on the ESPN networks
If you do not have a contract with ESPN you are not part of the primary sports center package

Our conference currently has a pretty entertaining brand of football and has solidified itself as the sixth conference I think the next contract will be better

Bowl games are for the players, even more so with the playoffs (are only ones that really matter, beside prestige). 1 season of poor bowl performance does not a trend make. Same could be said for wins. Performance over time is what matters. I would imagine the networks are more interested in "in season" performance.

The AAC's deal is better than the MWC. It is less than the BEast got from Fox. Fox overpaid to try to up their game. We talked with Fox, and had an overpay option from them as well. We decided to take less to go with ESPN. Higher value in the ESPN brand marketing.

At least that's what I recall.

RE: Just Curious ... "Is the AAC's Chance of New TV Contract Dying with the Bowl Season?" - DallasTiger - 12-26-2015 06:46 PM

It is really all about ratings. The higher the ratings, the more ESPN can charge for the commercials. You have to look at the games played in 2015 and how those games were rated and also what the sales staff at ESPN feels about the salebility of the AAC package. If it makes everyone happy and there are not better options for ESPN, the AAC and ESPN should be back in business again. Having several teams in the Top 25 during the course of 2015 didn't hurt the AAC cause one bit.

RE: Just Curious ... "Is the AAC's Chance of New TV Contract Dying with the Bowl Season?" - OneShiningMoment - 12-27-2015 04:10 PM

AAC signed a seven-year, $126 million TV contract with ESPN for rights to telecast the league’s games, primarily football and basketball. The deal runs through the 2019-20 season
