Top down view showing the footings for the new visitors stands. You can see the 5 degree offset to allow better sightlines from the home side. The "point" in the home side stands will be at about the right side 40-45 yard line.

Y'all have a home and away side?

Also, will the stadium have a new name?

Looking at overhead pictures, maybe you should have put the field down the first base line instead of 3rd base line. There are more upper deck stands down the first base line and you would even have upper deck seating in end zones. Plus, there would be less seating to demolish, should you decide to demolish excess seating. Just my thoughts, I like this project.

For most football fields north/south is the way to go.

The 3rd base side of the stadium is the view seen from I-85/75.

Regarding north/south versus east/west:

Yes, more upper level seats could have been retained with an east/west orientation, but we would have lost the former 755 Club space and I am willing to bet keeping that space was a priority. Also by doing a north/south orientation, the late afternoon/evening sun will be behind the tall stands and shade the field more than if we had demolished some of the western side. Third baseline is mostly direct north/south but the first baseline was several degrees north of east/west.

Total capacity is not an issue here, it will likely be many years before we consistently sell out 33k anyway. Realistically we may not even consistently sell out the 23k we get from Phase 1.

RE: Turner Field to be sold to Georgia State University - BullsFanInTX - 04-24-2017 09:49 PM

Good info jothcra. What's the difference between phase 1 and 2.

RE: Turner Field to be sold to Georgia State University - jothcra - 04-25-2017 02:45 PM

Phase 1 is most of the construction in the lower bowl and some minor replacements/upgrades (some signage, concessions, etc) to make the stadium serviceable for football in August.

Phase 2 is doing necessary refits in the top deck to expand the capacity by ~10k seats and the rest of the behind the scenes renovations in the offices, new football support facilities, and the major finishing touches. After this is complete, work should begin on the baseball stadium at the former Atlanta Fulton County Stadium site.

Why are they already expanding the capacity? What is is after phase 1?

Phase 1 capacity is about 23k. Phase 2 capacity utilizes existing upper deck seats with some minor changes and goes up to 33k. I wouldn't necessarily call it expanding since the phase 2 seats technically already exist, we just won't use them this year.

Our three biggest reported crowds (paid attendance) to date:

9/2/2010 - 30,237 - Inaugural program game vs. Shorter University (NAIA, now NCAA D2)
10/25/2014 - 28,427 - Versus GS
9/2/2011 - 26,273 - Versus Clark Atlanta (NCAA D2)

All of those games, were they to have been played at Georgia State Stadium, would have needed those upper deck Phase 2 seats. As the program grows, it isn't unreasonable to assume at least one game per year will eclipse that 23k attendance mark. The 2016 matchup with GS is #4 all time attendance at 23,513, and that was with both teams having a really off year.

Those extra seats will also come in handy when trying to attract bigger schools for future home-and-home scheduling. Our non-conference slate at home for the next 8 seasons includes Tennessee State, Memphis, Kennesaw State (D1 FCS located about 30 minutes north of GSU), Western Michigan, Furman, Army, Charlotte, UNC, and Vanderbilt. Some of those schools will travel very, very well and those games could be a sellout even at 33k capacity.

Seems like the majority of those upper deck seats would be just fine as is for football. Other than reworking some seating down the former RF line what else needs to be done up there?

Rights have not been sold yet. Reportedly down to two interested companies. Praying we don't GSU this and end up Huddle House stadium.

I think your assumption is corect. I have not heard of it anything being done up there to seating in either phase.
