Who knows if it translates to the next level but 24 of 27 came after half and as you said he hit the game winner so the kid seems to be someone with the onions to come up big when it's needed. Also to speak to the quality of the program and competition. Williford (UVA a Marshall alum) Hubert Davis, and assistants from Kansas were at the game last night. Good thing the LOI is signed for Jones to go to JMU. Curious who else they could have been watching though.

He is not a great shooter but unlike the current collection of misfits he can take people off the dribble and attack the basket. His athleticism is probably what initially attracted Georgetown but his shooting is what ultimately caused the separation. Based on everything I am hearing he can be a piece of the puzzle on a good CAA team.

My father was a life long Georgetown fan. A constant source of irritation for him over the last 30 years was lousy outside shooters. Oh, they had scorers, just not reliable shooters. When those lanes would get effectively shut down, it meant for a long night for the Hoya guards.

3 star kid with good height for a guard at 6'5" Matt Lewis has good height as well. I know that shooters are important but slashers/scorers are more important IMO. VCU doesn't really have shooters and they seem to do ok with athletes. BTW I wouldn't read too much into the Gtown decommit. That program is on shaky ground- a former 5 star kid announced he's transferring out yesterday. Lot of guys transferring out the last few years- losses to Mid/Low Majors- Arizona State with Bobby Hurley very similar in terms of shaky ground.

I just found it ironic that his outside shooting was below Georgetown's standards. Woulda thought GT would be used to that by now.

Greg Jones teammate (unsure of name) but he's a freshman has the potential to be a one-and-done college player. that's who Hubert Davis and the likes were watching

Yep- that's right Isiah Todd- looks like a legit shot blocking 4-5. JMU recruited him early on and offered but looks to be out of our league.

BTW JMU offered another Juco today- Willie Nunez. Plays for Indian River State College in Florida it's a D1 Juco. He's listed as a 6"6" guard. Is their leading scorer- shoots about 35-40% from 3 but puts up a lot of shots. JMU looks like his first offer.

Anyone interested in watching JMU commit Greg Jones and the John Marshall team play over the next few days I believe that their Holiday Tournament is being streamed online via this link.

The Dukes are recruiting a wing from South Carolina, Kaiden Rice. He's 6'7" and a good 3 point shooter. Rice is being recruited by Charlotte, East Tennessee, Georgia Southern and others. He is taking an unofficial visit to JMU this weekend. Rice recently performed well in a tournament that also had the Florida high school team with Darius Banks and Serrel Smith.

RE: 2017 Hoops Recruiting - Rock House Duke - 01-11-2017 11:39 AM

Rice would be an excellent pickup for the Dukes. His combination of size, athleticism, ball handling, and range would allow him to be a star in the CAA

Also regarding shooters. Willy Nunez a Juco who JMU had offered just picked up another offer from Tennessee Chattanooga. Here is his highlight reel from the first half of this season. Seems like a good 3 point shooter.

RE: 2017 Hoops Recruiting - NJDuke97 - 01-16-2017 11:26 AM

Just a couple of updates. Deshawn Thomas a big from Florida who JMU was a finalist for a few months back committed to a Florida Juco. I'm not sure if grades/test scores played into his decision or not. Maybe JMU will stay on him and he could be a class of 18 or 19 Juco commit.

Also Willy Nunez a Juco who was offered recently by Chattanooga was also offered by UTEP (Tim Floyd). After watching his video his game/appearance reminds me a little of ex Duke Kyle Swanson.

Matt Lewis from O'connell and JMU commit, had 24 against Dematha the other night in a 73-71 loss. Dematha is a basketball powerhouse and is currently no. 2 in the WashPost hs basketball rankings. they typically have 3-4 high major recruits.

Lewis looks to be a very promising pick up.

Thanks for the update. I'd venture he will be a starter next year - or, at minimum, will get 20+ minutes a game.

If he was only a PG.

RE: 2017 Hoops Recruiting - PGJMU2 - 01-18-2017 05:38 PM

following up on Matt Lewis, his teammate Nate Watson, is going to Providence.

Dematha has one kid committed to Notre Dame and the other is committed to Providence. I am sure their juniors are getting high major looks as well.

Mid season reports that mentions two of JMU's Richmond area commits, Zach Jacobs from undefeated Trinity Catholic and Greg Jones from John Marshall.

i wonder if the DMV catholic leagues are as competitive as the richmond area leagues jacobs and jones are playing in.

RE: 2017 Hoops Recruiting - jmutoml757 - 01-19-2017 09:22 AM

A friend of mine who played D1 basketball coaches high school ball here in the 757. He was at a game recently (scouting) and watched Jacobs play and was very impressed. He talked about his game- said he shot well, played with his back to the basket effectively, moved well, played defense. He had nothing but positives about the young man. Again, this from a coach and a guy who played D1 ball.

I would probably argue that the DMV Catholic league is one of the top leagues in the nation.

RE: 2017 Hoops Recruiting - JMU2004 - 01-19-2017 10:43 AM

Zach Jacobs was named the Scholar Athlete of the Month by the Richmond Times Dispatch. He carries a 4.2 GPA.
