2017 Hoops Recruiting - Dukes84 - 12-19-2015 12:19 PM

If you follow what Matt Brady does in recruiting, he's often the first guy, or one of the first, to offer a player (look at the dates on the VC site). Many times that player then takes off and becomes a highly targeted recruit. That was the case with Marquell Fraser, who opted for VCU as a late add for them.

If you look at the verbal commits site, JMU is on several three and four star recruits for 2017. If you look more closely still, they're on a 4-star small forward in Hameir Wright (6-8), a 4-star power forward in Daniel Mading (6-9) and a five-star, 6-11 power forward in Bamba. Bamba is being recruited by Duke, Kentucky and Syracuse to name a few. Who was the first to offer him? JMU. (The ESPN site has the first two guys listed as considering JMU, but not Bamba...that's actually where I first noticed this).

With respect to 2016 recruiting, I watched a very brief video on Zach Hollywood. He looks like he's got a chance to be a good player. Can really shoot the ball, can score from the outside and inside, has basketball IQ and has some hops and explosiveness around the rim (all things I had heard about him). He doesn't have great lateral quickness, though, and is extremely thin. Will be interesting to watch him develop.

It has been a lesson in adverse selection for sure

Basketball recruiting is tough to follow for me so I don't even really try. You have kids getting offers in 9th grade and stuff and with all of these offseason teams and AAU teams and stuff, it's just impossible to really even think much about until signing day.

I saw where JMU offered a PG from Newport News yesterday. He's a smaller PG but seems like a scorer. On social media he's listed as 2016 however on some other sites he's listed as 2017. I know they have an offer out to another PG from NC (Jordan Shepherd) for 2016.

Maybe it is time to extend our coach's contract. This will take our coach out of lame duck status and assure the potential recruits they will be playing for the coaches who recruited them.

I have no inside info at all but I would think that'll happen soon.

Name of that kid offered over the weekend is something like Jermaine Marrow. Plays at Heritage High in Newport News. He's not very big...most often listed around 5-10. He's been putting up big numbers this season and was rewarded with national player of the week by someone if you look at the tweets by his name. He was a 2016 player but reclassified to 2017. Not sure where that stands.

Made the comments I made on this thread to show that Brady has an eye for talent, not to suggest that we should all follow recruiting. It's unusual, in any event, for JMU to be involved with three guys rated 4 stars or better at this point and it's probably a pipe dream to think the Dukes would get any one of those guys.

I think the Dukes really need a point guard for the 2016 class. Jordan Shepherd is one of the prime targets for that at this juncture.

Are you kidding, no thinking about it, we need a master at getting us across mid-court under pressure. All anyone needs to study is how we handle FC pressure and they'd beat us going away.

I believe he was going to go to a private school and reclassify as 2017 but he stayed at Heritage and is 2016- visited JMU a couple of weeks ago before they offered. He also has a younger brother (I believe class of 2017) Malik Marrow- a little taller at 6'3" but pretty highly regarded as well. Plays at Cape Henry.

RE: 2017 Hoops Recruiting - Dukes84 - 12-27-2015 01:01 AM

VC has Marrow now as a 2016 player. JMU is actually on 4 players rated 4 stars or better by at least one rating service in 2017. Jamir Moultrie, a point guard, is rated 3.7 stars, same rating as Wright, I believe it is. JMU is also involved with several three star shooting guards for that same class.

RE: 2017 Hoops Recruiting - JMU13 - 12-27-2015 01:19 AM

Random...but I'm starting to wonder how UNCW and Northeastern and other CAA schools can get 3 and 4 star guys to pass up BIG name schools to go to their program...but we have yet to grab anyone over 2 stars. Hopefully we can change that this cycle!

RE: 2017 Hoops Recruiting - Dukes84 - 01-05-2016 03:47 PM

Mading committed to AZ State.

RE: 2017 Hoops Recruiting - NJDuke97 - 01-05-2016 04:03 PM

For 2017 I think Michael Hueitt could be one to keep an eye on- he is a SG and plays at High Point Christian in NC (same school as Jackson Kent and Joey McLean). Also they have an offer out to a big from Canada- seems to have a Dimitre/Satkius body type. If they progress with Jermaine Marrow (at this time a 2016 PG from Heritage in VA) his brother Malik is highly thought of for 2017 so they may have a shot to get both brothers.

RE: 2017 Hoops Recruiting - NJDuke97 - 01-06-2016 07:18 AM

In recent days JMU also offered a 2017 2.5 star SG from NY- Brandon Randolph. VCU, GW, Manhattan and Hofstra have also offered. I wouldn't be surprised if he attends the JMU Hofstra game in Hempstead on 1/16.

RE: 2017 Hoops Recruiting - NJDuke97 - 01-09-2016 12:16 PM

Now that Shepherd is in the fold as a PG for 2016- the hope is with all of the available scholarships for 2017 JMU gets an early commitment from a wing and a big. Then with the balance of the scholarships they can hopefully even out the classes a bit while creating some depth via a juco, a 4 year transfer, a 4 year Euro player, and maybe even a grad transfer.

good signing in shepard. I think you may see some guys redshirt next year.....Lukic for example.....Also, Brady contract situation will be interesting to follow next few weeks.

I seriously doubt anything will happen with Brady until March. I just hope that come March they go one way or the other. The program cannot handle another lame duck year like we did before.

RE: 2017 Hoops Recruiting - JMUNation - 01-10-2016 01:34 AM

This is Brady's 8th season. The Admin. should know by now if he is their guy. It should not take another season to decide that. In their eyes, Matt is their coach or they should actively be searching for his replacement. I say extend him now.

RE: 2017 Hoops Recruiting - Sr Townie for JMU - 01-10-2016 11:28 AM

Definitely time to extend his contract.

RE: 2017 Hoops Recruiting - NJDuke97 - 01-10-2016 12:13 PM

I think they can wait to extend or not- Brady is still technically under contract for next year as well even though there is a small buyout at the end of this year. Not sure how much that contract nuance hurts in terms of recruiting. Last time in 2013 he was literally on the last year of his contract trying to recruit kids. I like Brady but I'm not sure if he's proven enough this year to warrant an extension at this point. Who knows maybe there is an understanding or agreement behind the scenes anyway. The tone of his comments seems to indicate that he'll be leading the team next year as well.
