This Week In Schadenfreude -- Bowl Month - georgia_tech_swagger - 12-09-2015 12:55 AM

Reminder as to what qualifies, with impossibilities given a strike through:
- FCS over FBS always
- DII over FCS always
- Vegas spread getting blown out of the water (3+ TDs)
- Unranked over ranked
- Anybody losing to Kansas
- G5 over P5 nearly always (yes, even tur'ble P5's)
--- Except when the G5 is ranked or nearly ranked

Bonus Schadenfreude:
- TV Eyesores
--- Empty Stadiums
--- Hideous field configurations (looking at you bowl games played in baseball stadiums)
--- Bowls where it makes no sense for any member of an affiliated conference to play (looking at you Shreveport ACC tie-in)

how about conference teams playing each other? Think that would qualify, no?

RE: This Week In Schadenfreude -- Bowl Month - C2__ - 12-09-2015 01:33 AM

There's also the possibly of Army tackling Navy. The regular season is not quite over.

Big schadenfreude factor for this bowl season is any 5-7 team winning a bowl game.

As for this factor...

... during a bowl game you might check one of the trolliest troll accounts on Twitter, @EmptySeatsPics , tweeting out photos and screenshots of, duh, lots of empty seats.

RE: This Week In Schadenfreude -- Bowl Month - DavidSt - 12-09-2015 02:50 AM

Sadly, many of the ACC schools and UConn. are guilty of having empty seats.

The St. Pete Bowl was brutal. It wasn't played at a high level. It was in a baseball stadium. The turf looked like it was floating on a swamp. The place was mostly empty. Bleeeech. The Trop might be the most perpetually empty facility in all of major sports.

The MAC in is full meltdown.

And boy it hurts seeing any team with a losing record go to a bowl game, unless they have highly extenuating circumstances (NCAA sanctions on other teams forced them into a loss in a championship game, etc).

How is the MAC in full meltdown at 3-3?

Huh? The MAC is 3-3 in bowls. That is far from "full meltdown". Now the AAC, THAT is full meltdown.

I see Marshall fans showed up to the game. Crickets on the UConn. side.

What kind of technology do they teach in Arkansas?

No David...both teams traveled like poo...doubt there was more than 8000 fans there. I'd say about 2-3k for each school tops...and that is being generous

Video of crowd

It doesn't look like anyone from UConn or Marshall showed up for the bowl game today.

To be fair, there were some fans...

And this was an 11am game the day after Christmas. Not really the easiest date/time for a game.

I would think that you would have to work hard to make a plastic field look that bad.

Refs wanted to go home. IU's kick WAS good. Should have been 2nd OT. Can't believe that's not reviewable. Makes zero sense.

I'm in total agreement here. The Hoosiers were robbed and Duke played well enough to have the right to win it fairly. Once they all get home and see the video nobody will be truly pleased with this.

Wasn't that a PAC crew?

And this was an 11am game the day after Christmas. Not really the easiest date/time for a game.

This goes back to what I said about letting schools just schedule an extra game if bowl eligible as opposed to all of these far flung bowls that mess with people's schedules. This game would have done a whole lot better if it was on someone's campus. That's not to say get rid of all bowls but the number reduced. Heck, if you wanna leave the brutally cold north, schedule a game at a high school stadium in the south, there are plenty that are nicer than some college fields.

Speaking of empty stadiums, the Independence Bowl looks very empty. Who wants to spend their holidays in Birmingham, Mobile or Shreveport? There's only so many people that are into gambling to make that high desirable.

The live game, the camera was on an empty UConn. side. There seems to be more Marshall fans there.

The AAC is indeed much worse now. But having the two MAC champs get absolutely shelled by teams that on paper shouldn't have been even close to that dominate was no bueno. Perception of a conference tends to ride on the best 2-3 teams it has.
