Have we seen progression? - Hiller4Hyz09 - 11-19-2015 06:54 AM I'd love to hear from hoople and kimbo on this. We will finish 6-6. And it looks a lot like last year. In 2014, we played Idaho and a vulnerable BGSU. This yesr's schedule was tougher. Did we play better? When will we start beating the tougher teams? RE: Have we seen progression? - MajorHoople - 11-19-2015 07:41 AM Unless we beat Toledo and win bowl game, our record will be worse this year than last. As Bill Parcells said, "You are what your record says you are," which appears to be a .500 team in middle of MAC-West pack. Fleckies on here say next year is THE year. On post-game last night he implied it might be another ten years. We performed better this season against Ohio and BSU. Felt the same against EMU and Miami. We performed worse against CMU, BGSU and NIU. And I doubt the UT game will be a 1 point OT squeaker. That game will get ugly quick. I wonder if our November games will scoot back to Saturdays next year. Odds are we lose by more than 30, but I could see us going into the Glass Bowl and beating UT now that it doesn't matter. SOB RE: Have we seen progression? - Motown Bronco - 11-19-2015 09:06 AM Even though the game wouldn't 'matter', if we somehow beat Toledo (on the road, no less), it'd definitely be a nice footnote to the season that we could beat one of the MAC's upper crust. Something we haven't really been able to do in umpteen years. Not holding my breath. Hunt will eat us up like a second Thanksgiving feast. That game will get ugly quick. It will still make a difference in the standings. If we lose to Toledo, and CMU wins (which is more than likely) we will finish 4th in the West. Think about that. Highest paid coach in the MAC and a 4th place finish? Hasn't happened yet, but looking very possible. RE: Have we seen progression? - Doo - 11-19-2015 09:11 AM I think the team is playing faster this year. I think the running game as a whole is more productive. The QB play continues to be inconsistent, and the lack of depth in that spot is surprising. Defense is about a push. In fairness for all the dogging of BC thought that things were falling apart at the end. BC's last 36 games he was 17-19 v. Flecks 15-21. If we want the honest truth here, while the strengths of individual teams are different, the quality of play now doesn't seem much different than the standard BC team. RE: Have we seen progression? - Motown Bronco - 11-19-2015 09:12 AM Here's our MAC West placement since Y2K: 2000: 1st 2001: 4th 2002: 5th 2003: 4th 2004: 7th 2005: 3rd 2006: 2nd 2007: 4th 2008: 2nd (tied) 2009: 3rd 2010: 3rd 2011: 3rd 2012: 5th 2013: 5th (tied) 2014: 3rd 2015: TBD (2-4) RE: Have we seen progression? - rtletterman - 11-19-2015 09:14 AM (11-19-2015 09:11 AM)Doo Wrote: I think the team is playing faster this year. Strong showings against good teams but losing is still losing. RE: Have we seen progression? - MajorHoople - 11-19-2015 09:24 AM It's about performance. Are we closer to being "elite" (to borrow a term) now than we were at this time last year? RE: Have we seen progression? - WheresWaldo42 - 11-19-2015 09:45 AM I also recall discussing last winter how this years team would be better, but the record wouldn't reflect that. Games vs MSU and OSU plus road games vs NIU and Toledo. So none of this really should be shocking. That said, I think the original question is a good one. Is this team progressing and getting better? At times I would say yes, maybe because I think they can compete with anyone. However, until they get over the hump and get a signature win over one of the upper tier teams in the MAC, its hard to say they've really accomplished anything. RE: Have we seen progression? - Motown Bronco - 11-19-2015 09:58 AM What's interesting is that CMU has had NIU's number for a while now - a secret which I wish we had - yet unable to really take advantage of it. RE: Have we seen progression? - Doo - 11-19-2015 10:00 AM If we split the Toledo game and the bowl game....PJ needs to go 9-3 next year just to get to .500. If we lose both of these....well...we'll be waiting until year 5 at the earliest. RE: Have we seen progression? - Chipdip2 - 11-19-2015 10:48 AM You can't turn your personal life upside down and not have it effect other aspects of your life. Furthermore, you can't hold your subordinates to one standard, while you live by another. It's a sell job that doesn't play. He has to win 9 next year and win the league. No excuses. If he wins 7 or less than we'll know he's a one trick pony who can recruit but can't coach. In addition, he's going to lose coaches this year. How he handles that transition will be telling. It underscores the consistency through coaching changes -- from Kill to Doeren to Carey. Boomer Mays and the Huskies defense was huge down the stretch against a talented Western Michigan offense anchored by receivers Corey Davis and Daniel Braverman. A missed opportunity tonight for P.J. Fleck's team, which controlled play much of the game but made too many errors. WMU has improved but needs to show it can get over the hump against teams like Northern Illinois.
