2016 Football OOC change - WIowl - 10-15-2015 09:25 AM

Looks like the Stanford game will no longer be the first of the year:

http://www.fbschedules.com/2015/10/kansas-state-stanford-schedule-2016-2021-football-series/

I hope this does not mean that Rice will have a bye for opening weekend. Looks like Rice could play at Stanford on Sept 17, can the Prairie View game be moved up to Sept 3?

Updated Stanford OOC:
09/02 - Kansas State
10/15 - at Notre Dame
TBA - Rice

Previous Rice OOC:
09/03 - at Stanford
09/10 - at Army
09/24 - Baylor
10/22 - Prairie View A&M

The Prairie View game definitely can't be moved up. I believe that's the Labor Day Classic.

Someone asked their Director of Athletic Communications....

@treeSIDjorge … If we play vs KState on 09/02, what's happening to the Rice game on 09/03?

@RobberBaron83 Soon ...

I like our odds against Stanford if we're playing them 24 hours after they play K-State. No need to move our game!

RE: 2016 Football OOC change - greyowl72 - 10-15-2015 02:53 PM

Wow. I think that could put a major kink in our schedule. We might wind up losing the Stanford game completely in 2016. If they back out of that date with us, an alternative game..home or away..could be very difficult to come up with. It's really tough to re-juggle the schedule at this point in time. Especially trying to fill a Labor Day Saturday...a la Wagner.
We might wind up having to schedule a CUSA game then. Not good

RE: 2016 Football OOC change - owl40 - 10-15-2015 02:59 PM

If they back out, I bet it is at least a $500K check coming our way and get to trade a L for W with someone else (e.g., Wagner).

Dammit. I was thinking about taking a trip to California for that game. Moving past the first weekend means I may not have a kid at home to watch the dogs..

RE: 2016 Football OOC change - greyowl72 - 10-15-2015 03:10 PM

I made some great Palo Alto plans for that weekend myself.
I suppose Stanford could keep the game by moving it into the future even farther. I wouldn't know if there's usually some sort of penalty for that. Seem like there would be if we wind up having to play Odessa Permian or some such.

Yeah, not good mojo right there

Fault line on this board--

some people want to play Stanford as a shot at a win of opportunity

others want to play Wagner to build confidence, avoid injury, and increase the probability of being bowl eligible

Does it really matter who we play in the pre-season? 05-stirthepot

Well played.

Haha, thanks. Was hoping someone would get the reference.

Back to the discussion of Stanford next year...we should hope that Stanford is off the schedule next year, lest they beat us by 35 plus. They're currently making mincemeat out of UCLA in Palo Alto. Can't wait to hear Bailiff's press conference after getting beat down by athletes that have equal or better academic qualifications to ours.

With Prairie View already on the schedule, I don't think we can count a second FCS opponent against bowl eligibility.

This one is a bit sticky for JK.

I think it is most likely that the game will be moved to an available weekend for both teams, most likely Sept 17. Since Stanford is playing Kansas State AND Notre Dame in OOC, they are going to want Rice to stay on the schedule.

I think the sticky point for JK is if Rice gets blown out at Stanford, his previous employers are not going to look highly on the job JK is doing in Rice football. And it's Bailiff, so the blowout is probable.

Just wondering how:

1) it matters what JK's former employer thinks of him; and

2) why a single game's score line in a single sport would degrade the eve lustily of an AD?

I hope we hit $tanford with a huge charge for moving that game. It would be awful to open the season with an off week. Our team doesn't have the depth to make it through 12 straight weeks of football.

Who are these others? I haven't seen any calls for another Wagner game.

I think the vote would be 100-0 in favor of Stanford.

Yeah, I think we are at the mercy of the Tree on this one. Hard to imagine there's going to be an FBS team available the first week. Of course, the odds are against us beating Stanford on the road anyway, so it's not like we would be losing a W we are counting on for bowl eligibility.

Now that I think about it, if the choices are keep the Stanford game for 2016 but lose having a bye during the season vs. delay the trip to Palo Alto and have an extra home game but against an FCS opponent, I might reluctantly choose the latter...

I just think that you need to have a balanced enough OOC schedule that gives you a reasonable expectation of 2-2.
