I sure hope the offensive line and defensive line start getting a little credit for JMU success. Particularly the offensive line who is setting up the offense for 700 yards per gams. We have great skill positions, but this offensive line is special.

Would have to agree, you can be a great runner but if the blocking isn't there, you aren't going nuts. Ask Demarco Murray.

RE: Trenches - lingerba - 10-01-2015 10:01 AM

Withers gave the entire O-line the offensive player of the game team award for the SMU game. Vad also acknowledged that we wouldn't be able to do what he is doing without the protection that they are providing.

RE: Trenches - JMU_71 - 10-01-2015 12:05 PM

This O-line is doing a good job on cut-off blocks and getting up to LBs on combo blocks. Once getting to the LB, they are doing a good job of holding those blocks. The running backs and Vad rarely have to make their first move until they are at least at to the line of scrimmage which is also great. I have been pleasantly surprised with the O-line's production this year considering what we lost and all of BDK's negative prognostication.

O-Line Pride!!!!

I believe that was vad thanking his o line in the ESPN segment by bringing them food.
0 sacks and one TFL against smu. That's impressive.

Same here. Losing I think 3 starters + top 2 backups, 6 of 10 2 deep from season ending 2 deep. 3 new starters, 2 of them who were playing D line last year, and the 3rd new starter a converted TE only in his 2nd yr? on the OL. Just thought they wouldn't be that good, at least in Sept, & would be the weak link in the offense. Glad to be wrong!

And just think, IF they healthy they could improve as the season progresses...

Damned straight! They remind me a lot of the 2008 O-line. Rodney got the glory, the beasts in the trenches got the credit.

I think we could also say the same about the 2004 squad. Notice a trend???

BP

O line on the 2004 squad also came to mind!!

You going to the Elon game? If so make sure to say hello. Wife and I will be there with older daughter (2010) and her husband.

Brian

RE: Trenches - Boris - 10-02-2015 07:22 AM

Agreed. Playing great right now. Two things I like about the future here:
1. Only 2 of the 5 starters are seniors, so we have more to build on. Lane has been a regular for a while now, but Richards is a new starter and new O-lineman.
2. From the verbals list this year, we have 5 more O-lineman coming on board next year. If not mistaken, we had 5 last year as well. Withers is clearly putting an emphasis on O-line recruiting which is something that Mickey lacked in the last few years.

Same goes for the D-line. They rotate a ton, so a lot of the underclassmen getting reps and always a focus on D-line recruiting as well.

Will do.

Boris knows how important the fat kids are to a football team's success. The O-line and D-line are the true skill positions!

Ha! You better believe it. I remember just looking forward to getting out to practice early so the coaches would let the fat guys catch punts or run routes with the "skill" guys before practice. That didn't take any skill. Felt more like recess!

Nice post, I was looking for my "Like" button.
