Jack Williams gets called out by John Archibald. - Memphis Blazer - 09-11-2015 01:17 PM

Williams has made way too many enemies with his support of UAB. This is either extremely unforgivable carelessness or brazen greed on Williams part. Mistakes like this is going to be exploited by his enemies. I am surprised that Archibald is the one to do it.

The last huge supporter of UAB was Richard Scrushy. Hope Jack has his nose clean.

I'm not sure if I can decipher what Jack's bill means & if John is in the right or Jack.

With this special session going on though I find myself going against almost everything that the house & senate is doing.

As someone who was younger when all the Scrushy stuff was going down, can anyone post a summary of how Scrushy was pro-UAB? I believe I've heard in the past that Scrushy wanted HealthSouth to be the naming rights partner on a stadium.

The bill he just sponsored is horrible... it basically makes it ok for politicians to accept money from lobbyists. Kyle Whitmire & Archibald are both going after Jack on this because that's what they do, attack corruption.

I like Jack and appreciate his fight for UAB. I just hope he isn't sponsoring this bill to get concessions for UAB later down the road.

Don't sell your soul, Jack!

Whitmire has also written a critical article and tweeted similarly...

Jack is no Boy Scout. He is pushing this "porn tax" as if it will solve the state's budget problems (pass the tax, fine, but don't act like it's the solution to all that ails us) and then this lobbyist bill. No one in Montgomery is clean, not even the UAB allies.

Scrushy was only pro-UAB if it benefited HealthSouth in some way. I would have loved to have a stadium if he could have provided a way with good money. Too bad his money was dirty.

Oh great, now infighting among us...this won't end well, I fear. :(

What infighting?

He might not be a boy scout, but that son of a ***** wrote "Rainbow Connection" so all is forgiven.

I couldn't figure out how to attach the picture in the post but it is here to open

Scrushy was instrumental in getting rid of AD Herman Frazier, possibly the stupidest human being ever to draw breath on this Earth,

Scrushy was pro-UAB in that he could be the giant fish in the donor pool. He went to school here and was by far the biggest money guy on the alumni rolls. His name would have been on everything, and he would be able to get an appointment with anyone on campus at any time.

At a place like Alabama, he'd be just another number. His support of UAB was only because it was a vehicle to further his own ego. Whatever, his money spent like anyone else's.

He was also a huge Vanderbilt booster.

Agree Jack is a the right guy of our indicted speaker

I give a good hint Jack lists his living as a consultant

But he is our crook

I am very disappointed in Jack. He's been on our side, and I back him in that, but this bill is way over the line.

RE: Jack Williams gets called out by John Archibald. - Memphis Blazer - 09-11-2015 02:05 PM

We better find us a backup benefactor in Montgomery. Jack challenged the Machine. He will not be in office much longer.

RE: Jack Williams gets called out by John Archibald. - legalblazer - 09-11-2015 02:11 PM

The way I read that article... Jack misunderstood what the bill did as written (by someone else)... He thought it added additional ethical controls to stop people from being lobbyists for 2 years after they leave government... not realizing that it deleted the existing statute and made that the only restriction.

I sure he will clarify.

That why I said it is unforgiveable carelessness if that is true. He sponsored the bill. He needs to know what it says.

+1 he will be gone the next election he has. Though no one around here wants to hear that.

This bill is ridiculous with a capital R. As Archibald sort of suggested, I see this as opening the door for contributions to politician's legal defense funds (re; Bentley's that's currently being bankrolled by PBJ et al). Seems like he is trying to do some people some favors.

By the way, this is what these CLOWNS think they need to be doing as the state remains with out a budget in a "special" session.

RE: Jack Williams gets called out by John Archibald. - BAMANBLAZERFAN - 09-11-2015 02:25 PM

I recall that Jack Williams was the founder (and owner) of the first - or one of the earliest - Blazer web sites. I was a member until it went to subscription. You can't get more "pro Blazer" than Jack Williams, and so I hope he is going to continue to be able to help us in Montgomery.

In regard to Richard Scrushy, he was originally the Troy University BOT financial angel for Troy giving them millions and at one time, their stadium bore his name. It was after he was named to the UA BOT (reputedly as a voice for UAB) that he got into difficulty when he gave $500,000 to Siegelman's Lottery campaign supposedly in return for a state hospital post (which he had served on previously). There has been suspicion that both were victims of the Bob Riley political machine.
