I bet Mike Boone loved being called Mike Brown

Quote:The Bearcats have retooled to accentuate the run more prominently and take some of the pressure off Kiel.
The Bearcats threw it 491 times and ran it 454 times last season, an imbalance that Tuberville would like to correct.

Now I’m all for balance but I hope Tubby isn’t going to force the run at the expense of the offense when clearly your teams best playmakers are at QB and WR. If UC is able to run the ball effectively, then fine, run all day long cause that will make them a very dangerous team. But you can’t force the run just because the football textbooks say you should be more balanced.

I agree Nacho. Balance for the sake of balance, is not the right view.

But, one thing I am hearing about the OL, is that it is a lot bigger now, and more equipped to run the ball. Factor in three RBs, all in the mix to start, and it is a very balanced offense overall. I'm optimistic that the offense will be more balanced, because now it can be.

Is a difference of only 37 more passes total over 13 games really that big of a deal? Maybe it is when you factor in sacks and taking a knee but I never felt like we were running the Run and Shoot.

If UC can run the ball more to control the game and the clock it is ok by me. But I agree not at the expense of holding back a powerful passing game.

This offense is going to be explosive on the run and the pass. Running and controlling the clock wins games and saves QB's.

Good point on taking a knee and sacks, but my first thought reading this as well was "um, isn't that pretty balanced?" It means they passed 3 more times than they ran every game. Seems pretty balanced to me.

You just have to stretch out the drives to give the D a breather. If they want to pass more than run, then fine. But make the passes short. Get the ball to guys like Shaq and let him make people miss in the open field.

On the other hand, if we really have more depth on D this year than in the past, then we should be able to rotate fresh guys in no matter how fast the offense scores.

I have heard Tubs say things like "Well we had 300yards passing this game...I'd rather it be 300yards rushing, but I'll take it". If we can run, we will run....

Yup, you don't gas/demoralize a defense with quick strikes. I played safety... I'd just say, well they got one past me. But, if a team runs up the middle on a 10 play drive right down the field. Well, they just took your manhood.

No defense gets demoralized when it's own offense scores in 90 seconds. 03-wink

demoralized no. gassed yes. See 2009. Our D gave up big points, primarily because they were on the field 2/3 of the game. But we went 12-0, so who cares! 04-cheers

It is the offenses job to score points, lots of them, its the defenses job to stop the other team from scoring. Saying the offense should score less or more slowly is ridiculous.[/align]

I don't think anyone is saying the offense should score less. UC did not throw the ball that much a few years ago when they hung 72 points on Austin Peay. George Winn and company ran all over the Governors.

Let's be real for a second, it is not as if the coaching staff will run the football 75% of the time here. We will likely see something in the neighbor of 55-60% pass and 45-40% run.

Having Gunner go out there and throw the ball 66-75 times a game is not going to guarantee success the entire season. Opposing defenses will scheme appropriately. If they do not have to worry about the run they will load the secondary with various packages to stop the pass without any worry of UC running the ball. Moreover, there will be games were weather conditions will be a factor and there will simply be days when the offense simply does not have it and the other team has some shut down corners.

RE: Kiel settles in for Cincinnati team picked to win AAC - rath v2.0 - 08-19-2015 10:33 AM

66-75 times a game?

Notating the 3 games he got hurt and left the game, he attempted the following numbers of passes last year.

37
39
32
27 (Memphis)
57 (Miami, Fl game high number)
20
22
1 (Tulane)
44
30
31
24
26 (VT)

That does not look unbalanced.

Healthy returnees Tion Green and Hosey Williams and 2nd year Mike Boone will help with the balance..

RE: Kiel settles in for Cincinnati team picked to win AAC - Bearcatbdub - 08-19-2015 02:54 PM

You have to be able to run the ball when you need to. No way it should hold back the passing game, tho. Don't want us to get beat by being to conservative. As long as we can still throw downfield, we will be able to run...

RE: Kiel settles in for Cincinnati team picked to win AAC - Dannyboy - 08-21-2015 08:24 PM

You want to be able to run when they think it's a pass and pass when they think it's a run. Being 2 dimensional baffles them. Then you do whatever you want.
