... "What happened in the bowl game last year — it is over and done with — but it is something that there was kind of some scuffles and fights in practice, and it is something we don't want to bring back ever again. It was kind of an embarrassment to us. We have all gotten past it, but it is kind of a disciplinary thing that was needed. All of us are upset about what happened yesterday. It was one of those things that we learn from and it really hit home. Remember where you came from. That's where we were at the bowl game and we are a lot farther along now. So don't look back. I guess that's where we are now."

* Said defensive end Remington Peck: "Basically, ever since the fight in Miami, there is a zero-tolerance fight policy. It is going to be like that from now on, is what it sounds like. If stuff like that happens again, there will be punishment for it."

Peck told me that the players know who will be suspended due to the brawl against Memphis after the bowl game, "just because we realize who was involved." However, he said there's been no official announcement from the coaches or anything like that. "We just know because we've talked to the guys in the locker room," he said.

* Radio reporter/blogger Mitch Harper asked Mendenhall on Wednesday whether any decisions and suspensions from the bowl game brawl will be announced soon.

"Those decisions were made a long time ago, and I don't intend to address it publicly, at least until game week," Mendenhall said, reiterating what he said several times during spring camp and again on media day in June.

Based on conversations with several players, I am predicting that four players will be suspended for one game (the Nebraska game) due to the brawl....

"Kind of a disciplinary thing?"

The sucker punch punk is kind of a douchebag thing....and definitely a disciplinary thing!

I'm sure his dad is proud! 03-nutkick

The funny thing was his sucker punching AFTER getting his ass kicked...which makes him an even bigger *****!

Danny Ainge called.

He wanted to clarify that the zero tolerance fight policy does not include fastballs thrown at the back of Mario Elie's head from 10 feet away.

I can't remember is memphis suspending anyone from this game? Both teams should have multiple suspensions. I enjoyed watching the brawl personally but it's a disgrace for the teams involved.

I don't believe that anyone from either team was suspended/punished at all.

This.

One of the main reasons why no decision has been made yet is unlike most teams in the country that open up the season during the first few weeks with joke non-conf games (many vs Div I-AA), BYU opens the season:

at Nebraska
BOISE STATE
at UCLA
at Michigan

Does BYU Coach split up suspension by games? (i.e. 1 or 2 players miss each game)

Would a coach dare to suspend their players later in the season? (i.e. 5th game of season is at home vs UCONN, 8th game of the season is against some Div I-AA named WAGNER).

I think pressure to win and having 4 tough games to start the season, that might play the biggest role in who and/or even when might get suspended for BYU.

I heard a while ago that the helmet swinger was no longer a part of the team. Sure enough, just checked and he is not listed on the roster. Per this article from January, 12 players will be suspended from various TBD practices, scrimmages and up to two games.

Quote:The players will face suspensions ranging from a half-game to two full games of the 2015 season, as well as suspensions from practice and scrimmages. The players will also attend mandatory anger management counseling and perform community service hours.

Memphis coach Justin Fuente is not expected to announce the lengths of the suspensions nor the suspended players' names until the beginning of the 2015 season.

Would be a good question for some of the local media types...haven't seen it addressed recently.

My understanding is the decision on who BYU suspends is already made, just not announced until game week. Pretty sure they will sit out for Nebraska. By the way Nebraska is also suspending 5 players the first game, don't know which ones.

Only four from BYU and only one game? I'm sure they could find a few more with a close review of the videos. I mean they only had four tossing punches? One, of course, has to be the BYU center who started the whole incident. Another has to be that little punk who threw multiple sucker punches at the back of Memphis players heads. I mean only one game?

The Bowl officials created this situation with the configuration that brought the Memphis players to the BYU sideline celebrating. Doubt it would've happened in a football stadium.

Only the losers of the fight have to suspend anyone. Memphis is good to go.

True. Memphis players always go to "our" side of the field and celebrate with fans after a victory. In this instance "our" side was behind the BYU bench. Not good after such an emotional game.

the Memphis band was actually seated above the 1st base dugout, which was BYU's locker room entrance. it was just a cluster post game.

Wagner is in the NEC, the same conference as St. Francis (PA). They offer more financial aid than the rest of the NEC which allows them to play FBS schools.

Yep, one of the first things Fuente did was have the football team learn the fight song so they can sing along with the band after a victory. Pretty cool, actually.

One of the two Memphis players significantly involved in the fight, DE Martin Ifedi, was a senior and has graduated. He was the one who was initially shoved and unfortunately responded by taking the perpetrator to the ground.
