B1G is ready to "Man Up" on Football scheduling - Kittonhead - 07-31-2015 10:51 PM

Quote:Dropping FCS opponents — what Delany termed an “athletic directors agreement” among member institutions — might be a gradual process: Eight programs face FCS teams in 2016, for example, while others have future dates set up with members of the FCS. Iowa has a matchup scheduled with in-state FCS member Northern Iowa in 2018.

Removing FCS teams also raises the league’s overall level of competition, Delany said, which in turn increases the value of the game-day experience. Even as Big Ten home games drew more than 6 million fans in 2014, dwindling attendance has been a topic of crucial concern among FBS commissioners and administrators.

“As we were looking at our future, there are challenges around the game-day experience,” he said. “So I think better competition draws the fans more. I think if you asked players, they don’t like practice very often but they love games. They love big games. So I think it’s partly (for the) player and fan and television.

“Everybody knows a major intersectional opponent on the road is more difficult, but it can swing both ways. We would have loved to win the game at Oregon and we would have loved to have beaten LSU, but playing those games is important. Whether you win it or you lose, it’s a great gauge, it’s a great measurement. And I think it’s what this is about: playing big games on big stages gets the juices going and flowing.”

But the Big Ten’s new criteria is influenced most heavily by the impact of the College Football Playoff, and specifically in how the 13-member selection committee culls through relevant data and metrics to select its four participants.

RE: B1G is ready to "Man Up" on Football scheduling - Kittonhead - 07-31-2015 10:56 PM

Its going to be interesting to see what the impact on lower tier bowls is going to be for the next 3-4 years.

The B1G is moving to the following:

A 9 game conference schedule.
No FCS opponents.
1 game against P5 or ND/BYU
Most likely at least 1 MAC game.

The SOS will be up in the B1G while the winning percentage while be down. A lot of B1G universities would be lucky to beat a decent MAC football school.

You really should check for existing threads on the same topic

This thread starts with a neat article.

I can understand why an Illinois fan would be concerned. Shortcut to a bowl is eliminated.

No like most little brothers are so in awe of the Big Ten you had to try to get a gratuitous dig in at it

And if Illinois he needs an FCS win to go bowling I'd rather just stay home

Illinois is afraid to lose to another MVFC school again. Lol.

That "neat article" could have been posted to an existing thread.

Please show me where Illinois has lost to a MVFC team (In the I-A era).

Let's raise it to any I-AA team.

Ready, set, go. I am waiting.

OP posted the thread to troll. His stupid MAC comment is what he posted the thread for so he could troll.

They've actively avoided scheduling NIU for that exact same reason, even after NIU alums put UofI on blast in the paper

My friend is a UofI grad and Illini fan, and even he admits the football will be trash until the current HC is fired

Don't disagree with that, but David's claim that Illinois loses to MVFC is false - Illinois has never lost to a FCS team.

MVFC was MVC that was a FBS level back in the 1970s and early 1980s. I did not say FCS in that post. MVC was the likes of Tulsa, Cincinnati, Wichita State and many others that were in MVC at the time. Several of the teams in MVFC was a member of 1A at one time.
Former MVC schools.
Iowa
Iowa State
Kansas
Missouri
Nebraska
Kansas State
Oklahoma
Tulsa
Oklahoma State
Wichita State
Houston
Cincinnati
North Texas
Louisville
Memphis
New Mexico State
Southern Illinois
Illinois State
Indiana State

The lineup for MVC for 1A football from the 1970's until MVC dropped football sponsership in the 1980s.

Wichita State
Houston
Cincinnati
North Texas State
Louisville
Washburn
West Texas A&M
Memphis
New Mexico State
Southern Illinois
Indiana State
Illinois State

Some schools left to join another conference. Washburn and West Texas A&M got the shaft from the NCAA and were forced to go D2 with the rules. Wichita State dropped football. That left Indiana State, Southern Illinois and Illinois State with football, and became 1A Independents in the early 1980's. Then, they moved down to 1AA in mid-80s. It was in the 1970's early 1980s is when Illinois lost to a school in the Valley. With schools now in the P5 that was part of the MVC have beaten Illinois as well.

Army and Holy Cross were powers at one time too.
