Fallout from Seattle's minimum wage increase. - UConn-SMU - 07-22-2015 06:25 PM

This week the wage went to $11/hr. Eventually it will be $15/hr. Fox has an article about those workers asking their employers for reduced hours because the wage increase will disqualify them for government subsidies for rent, day care, and food stamps.

The liberal answer: make everyone eligible for the subsidies with incomes up $20/hr.

Silly Rabbit! The workers didn't want $15 an hour so they could get off of welfare and food stamps, they wanted $15 an hour AND still collect both welfare and foodstamps:

Seattle Sees Unexpected Fallout from $15 Per Hour Min. Wage
wage

by Warner Todd Huston 24 Jul 2015

SEATTLE, WA--Low wage workers in Seattle who spent months agitating for a city-wide $15-per-hour minimum wage were quite successful in their quest. But many have suddenly found that the new rate has had unexpected consequences.

Some workers across the city are left telling bosses to give them fewer hours at the higher wage because a full week’s earnings now puts them past the threshold for some welfare payments such as food stamps and assistance with rent.

Of course, one of the things that supporters of the higher wage said was that they wanted to help lift min. wage workers out of poverty and welfare.

Only last week, for instance, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti claimed that a $15 min. wage in his city would lift 600,000 out of poverty. Self-avowed socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), a VT Senator and a candidate for the Democrat nomination in 2016, also recently claimed that a $15 min. wage would “lift millions” of Americans out of poverty, off welfare, and into the buying public.

But now some workers in Seattle are finding that the higher wage is forcing them off the welfare programs they would rather stay enrolled in and, instead of celebrating their higher income, they are imposing fewer work hours on themselves in order to stay on assistance.

Seattle’s KIRO-TV recently spoke to a nursing nonprofit that admitted that some workers are trying to cut hours and earn less to avoid losing assistance. In another case, a local radio station has been talking about the story.

“If they cut down their hours to stay on those subsidies because the $15 per hour minimum wage didn’t actually help get them out of poverty, all you’ve done is put a burden on the business and given false hope to a lot of people,” said KIRO-FM’s Jason Rantz said this week.

There have been other unforeseen consequences to the higher wage: Some restaurants are tacking on a 15 percent surcharge onto customer’s bills in order to avoid firing workers.

Other stores, restaurants, and small businesses are simply closing down because they can’t afford the wage hike. By March of this year, for instance, restaurant closings increased at a much higher than average rate in Seattle.

Many restaurants noted that the new wage put labor costs at nearly 50 percent of operating costs, and that made profit margins disappear.

RE: Fallout from Seattle's minimum wage increase. - RobertN - 07-25-2015 09:51 PM

Except if you look at the threshold for most of the programs, the previous min wage was also too high to receive them legally as a single. At $15/hour for a family of 4 they would still be eligible(one worker) they would still be under. The only way it would apply is if 2 people work full time at $15/hour, that would put them over-considerably. I am wondering if the 2 people working is what they were referring to?

It is interesting that the article said, "some" workers were asking for fewer hours. What constitutes "some" and are employers responding to the request by giving them fewer hours? There needs to be a lot more information before any kind of conclusions can be made.

definitive reporting is a lost art....takes too long, and doesn't generate advertising dollars....

RE: Fallout from Seattle's minimum wage increase. - UCF08 - 07-26-2015 06:44 PM

This article is wholesale meaningless. It might as well be a Huffingtonpost article that states 'Most employers and employee response has been overwhelmingly positive!' because it states no numbers, no source, nothing of actual meaning. This vague nonsense shouldn't convince anyone, even those who want to believe this is true, and I wish more people on both sides would take the time to police their own so we can actually focus on the truth instead of confirming out own ideological beliefs.

Whether or not you believe raising the minimum wage shows significant overall benefits, or if it hurts the economy, you should be interested in learning the actual truth. Because in the end, everyone here just wants an America that is better than the one we currently live in.

the problem with that thinking is that you believe everyone should acknowledge the truth....

if the truth doesn't suit a specific interest, then the interest is lost upon those that seek 'truth' that fits their interest

truth is subjective to all humans regardless if the truth stares them in the face....we're still evolving.....

physics is the only thing that comes remotely close to defining the 'truth'....

it's not possible to define 'truth' when dealing with the behavioral pattern exhibited by humans over time....

spock is only half human.....there's a reason for that

So let me get this straight. You used to think NPR was relatively fair until you read on the internet that it wasn't. Because of that you stopped listening and now think otherwise based on some report? I would like to see where you got you info if you can find it.

Do you have any idea what your income has to be to get welfare assistance? Here are the US poverty guidelines. I believe that many federal programs are a little bit over these numbers. Please tell me how many people will get "kicked off" welfare by getting the raise? Answer: not many. The writer had to have spent a LOT of time to find several people with that thinking.

Agree. Now, how do you propose to obtain that truth?

Quote:Because in the end, everyone here just wants an America that is better than the one we currently live in.

Sorry, but I'm not willing to go that far. I think there are people on here, and I'm certain there are people in Washington, DC, who care only about getting their way and don't give a rat's ass about what's good for America.
