Louisiana Tech Football: A Look Back at 2014 and a Look to the Future - TechAlum05 - 07-21-2015 05:19 PM

With Conference USA Football Media Day coming up this week, we want to give everyone a review of Louisiana Tech’s football program since the victory over Illinois at the Heart of Dallas in late December 2014.

Tech is tossing around a $22mil figure for their new end zone project. The structure cost was $14mil and I wonder if any of you can tell us where the other $8mil was used.

Do you have a link showing it was $14 million? I don't know how one would prove the cost without actually seeing the receipts.

This is all I've got: "$22 million is great, but what we got for $22 million when it's all said and done is incredible." Tech AD Tommy McClelland.

Capital improvements (building const, etc) on any campus in the University of Louisiana System must be approved by the Board of Supervisors. To gain approval the school must present an explanation of the project as a whole, the projected cost, the sources of the funds, and how any loans are to be repaid.

La Tech, after long efforts, secured all the necessary info and officially presented their project as a package for approval to the Board of Supervisors at their Dec 13, 2013 meeting (see attached link). One can start at about page 6 or 7 where La Tech officials described the project, uses, etc, then outlined sources of funds (slightly less than half from donors and slightly more than half from student fee), then disclosed a breakdown on how the funds would be spent. The breakdown listed the building cost as $14,000,000 and others such as $700,000 furnishings, $1,400,000 reserve for future maintenance, $1,000,000 for contingencies, $1,600,000 for architect, and $200,000 bond issue cost for a total of $18,900,000.

My question is if they now say the cost was $22mil then where did they get the additional $3,100,000 and on what was it spent since everything was already covered in the original package?

I think he brings up a legitimate question. After all, Louisiana has always been known for having lots of upstanding politicians!

It is a good question. I hope that we still have another $3 million to put into it, but I'm happy with it now.

I would not have asked the question unless I cared and have a right to such info since I am a resident of Louisiana and along with other taxpayers are gouged for more than half the money spent by the Tech athletic dept each year.

Just out of curiosity, if you're a financial hawk for the great state of Louisiana, why aren't you beating this drum on the Sunbelt board? ULM and ULL help finance their athletic programs using transfers the same way as Tech.

Can't speak for ULM, but as a percentage of total athletic budget, I recall reading that the Cajun program utilizes significantly less state funding than LaTech.

EE seems to make some folks uncomfortable with some of the questions he asks. That's not necessairly a bad thing. If his time permits and he's so inclined, it'd be interesting to see him do a similar examination of our almost-completed advanced performance center.

I don't mind the questions at all. It's just a little odd a man would go to such lengths to single out one school who is only doing what the others do yet not a single word is spoken damning the other two schools. No matter if it's a penny or all the money in the federal reserve, a transfer is a transfer.

I don't mind the questions, either. While I know Eager is especially hard on Louisiana Tech, it's fair to ask. I'd like to see some questions be asked/answered about Grambling, as well.

La Tech downsized their stadium when making room to add the new south end zone facility. Their official site along with any other source for venue information had the capacity listed as 30,600 with their official site documenting the sequence of additions that raised the seating capacity to that level. Now, they just removed 3,800 seats, 1900 on each side, to make space for the new addition and will have 303 in the new addition for a net of 27,103 (36,600 - 3800 + 303).

THE question I have now is what do you think the administration will report as its new official seating capacity?

Cute.

Haven't been tarps in JAS for a long time.

Honestly, I've never spent two seconds wondering if some school's stadium seats any number of people more precise than "about 30k" or "over 100k" or whatever. Tech is an engineering school and I get the whole ocd inclination, but if our media guide said "just shy of thirty thousand" it would not make one bit of difference in the world for anyone other than the Lincoln Parish Fire Marshall. It's just trivia.
