Realignment winners and losers - Mark26pt2 - 06-12-2015 11:28 AM

Interesting article with some good thoughts on who the biggest winners and loser from realignment in the last 5 years of FBS football.

Good article. Basically my big takeaway, and one that as each year passes seems more and more likely is that NIU will never get into a P5 conference because it just won't ever make sense for the conferences to keep expanding with all the money they make. I mean seriously, If BYU, Cincy, and Boise State can't get in, i'm not sure how NIU does. Time will tell I guess.

IMO the best/only opportunity is if there ends up being four or five 16 team super conferences. There would basically be 64 high level teams and everybody else would drop down to what we know as FCS.

None of those schools have the golden Chicago TV market, which NIU does.

5 conferences with 16 teams each may be pushing it. 5 with 14 each may be more feasible because there's already 3 with 14 and it would be easy to add programs like Notre Dame, BYU, Cincinnati, and the service academies to the existing conferences.

14 would also be a good number for another reason: they could potentially do away with non-conference games & conference championship games and just make it so that every team in the conference plays each other at least once and whoever has the best record at the end is the conference champ.

Totally agree. It's wishful thinking though because I think we could get left in the cold if it ends up being four 16 team conferences. 5x14 could work. 13 game regular season all in conference. Six team playoff with the five conference winners and one wild card based on committee or computer data. Top two conference champs based on some sort of data/polling get byes into the semis while the other four teams play in the quarters.

I think 8 team playoff (5 conference winners, 3 best 2nd place teams based on overall record or tie-breakers) would work better. That way you get rid of the polls altogether.

Winners-everyone P5
Losers-most everyone not P5

That's NCAA football for ya

Only chance NIU has is for 5 sixteen team P5 conferences. This might be a compromise that most could live with. Probably a slim chance. I think we would make it into Big 12 if that were to be the scenario.

RE: Realignment winners and losers - MikeyF - 06-21-2015 07:28 AM

You need a stadium with a capacity of 50,000 for the Big 12.

The AAC is a more than likely landing spot if NIU leaves the MAC...

Always can add on to the 40k Huskie stadium will seat. Its Big 12 or bust for Frazier, and its refreshing to see an AD going for it all.

RE: Realignment winners and losers - MikeyF - 06-21-2015 07:35 AM

Initial plans are to increase the capacity to 35,000.

You will have to add it before they will accept you.

The Big 12 could be in the future but the AAC will probably be in the immediate future.

The AAC is a good launching point...

This is the red herring.

While NIU is located in northern IL, it has no more of the golden Chicago TV market than U of I, UIC, Northwestern, EIU, WIU, SIU, ISU or DePaul. The Chicago market really only has a limited interest in college sport. It is a Pro market.

The list of AD's and Coaches who were going to capture this elusive snipe is long.

Doesn't the Big 10 receive benefits in the Chicago market from having Illinois, Northwestern and other close by universities including Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana and the Michigans? I'd guess the Big 10 is the best rated conference on TV in the Chicago market and dominates the Big 12 as far as Chicago area viewership. Certainly having a Big 12 team in the market would certainly do something to help raise the status of the Big 12 in the Chicago area.

As for limited interest in college football in the Chicago area, I just don't get those statements. My friends are watching college football on Saturdays and bars and restaurants certainly aren't showing reruns of the Brady Bunch on Saturdays. As best as I know, they're watching college football and it is usually not the Big 12. Why wouldn't the Big 12 want to capture at least some additional piece of this?

RE: Realignment winners and losers - DeKalb57 - 06-21-2015 10:10 AM

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying there is no interest in non-Pro sports in the Chicago market. In fact, I agree with everything you're saying.

I'm just saying, I don't buy a college team "capturing" the golden Chicago market. There are too many other outlets and, it would require too many resources.

Did Frazier ever come out and say this? Just because you keep repeating it doesn't make it any more true.

Capture is quite a stretch. But, raising interest and additional viewership is what it's about.

The Big12 would gain some solid ancillary benefits by adding NIU, like increased exposure in Chicago, and better recruiting in-roads in Chicagoland. The REAL and IMPORTANT benefit though would a big 12 network's new realistic ability to offer its network and advertising on Chicago TV sets. We would be the biggest market in the system. The B10 would sh*t bricks if you took away the Chicago portion of its viewership/income.

Its not about NIU further "capturing" a market, its merely access to the market, and its millions of flat screens...

There's still interest in college football, but do agree Chicago being a strong pro town, and if there's a Chicago market available for watching any college football...especially on Saturdays, cannot forget the impact influence of Notre Dame.
