Memphis Slips From 20th to 23rd Largest City - umbluegray - 05-21-2015 05:53 PM

Memphis falls from 20th to 23rd largest city in latest census estimates

Quote:Memphis lost more than 1,600 residents and slipped three spots on the list of the nation's largest cities during the 12 months ending last July 1, census estimates released Thursday show.

The city's population fell from 658,508 to 656,861, according to the estimates. The new figure dropped Memphis from the 20th- to 23rd-most populous city in the U.S.

The estimates further show that the city's reign as the largest municipality in Tennessee is likely to end soon. Nashville, which has been gaining about 10,000 residents annually, grew to 644,014 and is poised to overtake Memphis, possibly this year.

What is the metro population now?

RE: Memphis Slips From 20th to 23rd Largest City - umbluegray - 05-22-2015 10:00 AM

Still around 1.34 million. Very little movement.

And that's with a 9th county being added.

That's a lie as no counties were added to the metro area...

Moreover, 1600 people is nothing when you're talking hundreds of thousands of people.

Last addition to the metro area was Forrest City in 2012.

This probably means more people moved out of the city bounds and into the surrounding metro areas. And, if it actually did decline in the "metro", the number is really not that significant. I would rather not be aspiring to be in the Top 10, those cities have a lot of issues because of such mass of population in an area.

City lost 1600

Metro gained 1500

Statistically insignificant IMHO.

A lie? No, a mistake as there are actually 10 counties included now.

I take your statement as challenging and derogatory given that you used bold text and used the word lie.

So, to give it right back to you...

You're lying when you say "no counties were added to the metro area.

Twenty-some-odd years ago the Memphis MSA consisted of only 5 counties. Then 3 counties were added bringing the total to 8. Then another county in Mississippi was added bringing the total to 9.

Recently, the Forrest City Micropolitan area was combined with the Memphis MSA bringing the total to 10.

Per the U.S. Census Bureau

1990 Memphis MSA

4920 Memphis, TN--AR--MS MSA 1,135,614 1,007,306 128,308 12.7%
4920 05035 Crittenden County, AR 50,866 49,939 927 1.9%
4920 28033 DeSoto County, MS 107,199 67,910 39,289 57.9%
4920 47047 Fayette County, TN 28,806 25,559 3,247 12.7%
4920 47157 Shelby County, TN 897,472 826,330 71,142 8.6%
4920 47167 Tipton County, TN 51,271 37,568 13,703 36.5%

A total of five (5) counties.

2004 Memphis MSA
32820 Memphis, TN-MS-AR Metropolitan Statistical Area
32820 05035 Crittenden County, AR
32820 28033 DeSoto County, MS
32820 28093 Marshall County, MS
32820 28137 Tate County, MS
32820 28143 Tunica County, MS
32820 47047 Fayette County, TN
32820 47157 Shelby County, TN
32820 47167 Tipton County, TN

A total of eight (8) counties per the addition of Marshall, Tate and Tunica counties in MS.

Yes, in 2012 the Forrest City Micropolitan area was added to the Memphis area to produce the Memphis-Forrest City, TN-MS-AR CSA.

Adding St. Francis County, AR brought the total to nine (9) counties.

From the Commercial Appeal, April 7, 2013

Rural Benton County, newcomer to Memphis metro area, is 'a different world'

Quote:Yet this county of 8,700 people is now considered metropolitan — or more specifically, part of the Memphis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Benton became the metro area's ninth county when the federal Office of Management and Budget on Feb. 28 issued a report updating the boundaries of MSAs across the nation based on 2010 census data.

That brought the total to ten (10) counties.

So before you go around accusing people of lying, get YOUR facts straight.

Or are you lying?
