*Instead of starting a new multiple threads I'll just edited the dates in the title

Good.. That should have been a No Brainer for the committee (and the entire legislature).

Jack says the SACS/Ethics bill will be voted on tomorrow in the House. Also the revisions to the open meetings law is on the calendar for Tuesday.

If this is all that comes out of it, then this is a failure. SACS has already shown they don't care.

I sort of agree, but not entirely. If the legislature passes this bill it will at least be a slap in the face to the arrogant Trustees since it implies on in its face that they need training in ethics - and Lord do they ever. Imagine all of these rich and powerful people being forced to take time out their so busy schedules to sit in a class for a day or two while some professor lectures them on what they can and cannot do ethically. I of course would like to at least see Jabo's bill pass and at best see a total separation from this BOT, but a little humiliation for people like Bryant, Espy and St. John apparently will have to do for a while because I don't see the other bills passing this session.

That said, also keep in mind that even the ethics bill is a long way from passing. Not only does the House bill have to be approved by the whole chamber, but it is still stuck in the Senate committee.

It is a positive step if it passes. Not enough, but progress.

The bill has more teeth than it sounds like on the surface. It also requires trustees to fill out the state's economic interest form and disclose business relationships trustees have with each other. Just shining a little more light on them.

Even if the bill passes and is signed into law, I bet it will become effective not sooner than 1 day after Bryant retires from the BOT. One way or the other, he will be exempted from any additional requirements (beyond what the law already requires) in the realm of public disclosure or ethical obligation.

Bryant has already had his last meeting. I guess he is on the BoT until his replacement is seated at the next meeting.

How much do you want to bet that 1 no vote was from Tuscaloosa?

Woah. 96-1. Message sent.

I was wrong. Randall Shedd from Cullman. I can guess who contributed to his campaign.

From the Cullman Times:
Quote:Randall Shedd, then the youngest person ever to serve as chairman of a county commission in Alabama, organized the county's first industrial development board, which included Bailey, Elliot Free, J.B. Vinson, Jay Mullins, Finis St. John, Pelham Butler, Bob Bryan, Ellis Hodge and Bill Wachter.
