TCU's Gary Patterson proposes 8 team playoff - thagr82008 - 05-16-2015 08:37 PM

TCU’s Gary Patterson Proposes 8 Team Playoff With Quarterfinals Replacing Conference Championships.....Eliminating Conference Championships altogether.....

http://collegespun.com/big-12/tcu-big12/tcus-gary-patterson-proposes-8-team-playoff-with-quarterfinals-replacing-conference-championships

“If you’re going to an eight-team playoff, you’re going to take the [conference] championship away,” he said. “And they’ll be OK with it because with eight teams that’s going to make up [financially] for the championship game anyway.”

Intriguing.

Per Patterson’s suggestion, four quarterfinal games would be played (this year) on Saturday, Dec. 5. That would give coaches time to recruit and for players to take finals. The semifinals would then commence as they are now in that Dec. 31 – Jan. 1 window.

“You have to play the quarters early,” Patterson said. “Everybody has finals, everybody has stuff that is going on. If you have an early signing date, you’ve got to play it then.

They are sounding desperate.

It will eventually expand. Just don't know exactly when.

Or break up. You won't see the Big 12 in its current configuration in 8-10 years. That 4 team playoff is there for a reason. FOUR conference champs !!!

I mean the playoff will eventually expand. They won't stay at 4. It will go to 6 or 8 or 12 or whatever. Simply a matter of time.

It'll be at least 15 years before the playoff expands. It took from 1998 to 2014 for it to get from 2 to 4.

I'd take that bet. The current contract expires after the 2025 season. If they don't amend the current contract (which they could) it will expand beyond 4 for the 2026 season. Book it, Danno.

RE: TCU's Gary Patterson proposes 8 team playoff - Tiger46 - 05-17-2015 01:12 PM

I think they will expand to an 8 team playoff way before 2025, because the four team playoff was so popular, successful and decisive. Under the old system, Ohio State would not have made the two team championship game. Expanding to 8 teams will generate even more excitement and revenue while opening up the possibilities of more upsets.

i think it'll probably end up with 5 automatic spots to P5 conference champs + 3 at large bids and one of those maybe for a non-P5 team

That's what I'd really like to see. That way, all of the P5 champs get in, plus the best of the G5 champs, along with 2 at-large. I am not sure that they will offer the G5 that bone, though.

The reason that Ohio State got in over Baylor & TCU is because "upsets" cost revenue "loses" The 4 team playoff helps the committee control that revenue loss effect. If TCU gets in over Ohio State, that would amount to hundreds of millions if not a kool billion $ of revenues lost....TCU doesn't have the tradition or numbers of a fanbase to Warrant playoff consideration. Remember, it's ALL ABOUT $.....NOT gonna happen! Upsets are no bueno!

That was sort of my point, the old system it's Alabama and Florida State. Four teams, Ohio State got in over TCU. Would that have been the same if Texas or OK had TCU's record, probably not. But if they were at 8 teams last year no doubt TCU gets in, regardless of TV money/rating possibilities.

RE: TCU's Gary Patterson proposes 8 team playoff - Mimi - 05-18-2015 09:50 AM

Issue is not whether team number three was capable of beating teams one or two, or whether team number nine is capable of beating team one or two or even team eight. Of course they are. Even team twenty is capable of beating team number one.

Ability to win a game is a very separate point from who belongs in a game when there are limited slots. Of course Ohio State was capable of beating Oregon or Alabama, still a very different idea from whether they were deserving, as a good team, of that shot.

If winning the games somehow proves they were deserving, them getting blown out a few years back by LSU and Florida would prove they were undeserving?

Bottom line is the percentage of teams with a real chance to win will be lessened with more teams getting the opportunity to play.

Uh, no. The BiG had a conference champion with a legitimate claim.

The B12 had co-champions, and refused to name a single champion. TCU passed the "eyeball test" at the end of the year and appeared to be the best, but then again Baylor BEAT TCU. So the B12 - just like their expansion plans - became immobile and indecisive.

tOSU played 13 games, including their CCG.
TCU/Baylor played 12, and had no CCG.
Boom. Decision made.

An interesting point, but I don't agree. If Texas was 11-1, but lost to a conference foe who was also 11-1, then Texas could not legitimately say it was the best in the conference. And, since the B12 was unwilling or unable to name a specific champion, it was easy to pass those schools over.

I agree that Texas and OU have more cache'....your point there is valid. But I don't think that would've made a difference because tOSU has the same amount of cache'

Again, JMO.

Whatever you were saying after the bold portion and the bold portion itself had nothing to do with it. Ohio State played 13 games and in game 13, they beat the #13 in the country soundly. TCU played 12 games and in game 12 beat a 2-9 Iowa State team.

How? Why?

You think the SEC is going to give up its championship game to help the bignot12

You really think the Big 10 is gonna suffer having Rutgers and Maryland and help out Bowlsby

You think Larry Scott is gonna help a conference he poached god awful Colorado from

Wut?

8 may happen but it won't be next year or soon
