[split] Legion Field Stadium Certificates and Other Musings - BAMANBLAZERFAN - 05-13-2015 06:43 PM

Just wondering if FBHC Clark plays golf and if he was invited for the Wed. pro-am? I did not see his name on this year's list and also wondered if he was invited to play last year.

If he is a golfer and was not invited in 2014, considering the socio-economic level of those who set up this event, can we "read between the lines" that something was up about UAB FB as early as last spring?

Try to stay on topic.

You only get invited to the pro-am if you are a Legion Field certificate holder

I know you are being sarcastic, but can you name another FB program in America that had to virtually give away the best 5,000 (50 yd line) seats to all its home games for free ("promotional tickets") or general admission (at best)? That's what UAB had to do because of those SCs. None could be legally sold to UAB fans as season tickets unless (like T.C.Cannon) you happen to hold a couple through inheritance.

How might UAB's "bottom line" have been affected for the better by being able to collect "Blazer Pride" premiums for such seats as many other programs do while UAB could not even legally sell them in advance at regular price?

My season tickets were in the gold seats... I asked for a certain row and they gave them to me. I don't think "certificates" were ever an issue.

That's why I specified "LEGALLY" since the clerks at the UAB ticket office might have had no awareness of the Stadium Certificate contract requirements under Alabama law. They might have even sold the section 10 & 11 seats as well. Sometimes one can run a red light or a stop sign and not get caught. That doesn't make either "legal".

Or perhaps you don't know what you are talking about.

Get back to me when any other college program practically gives away thousands of the 50 yard line seats for every home game in the season (and then perhaps wonders why it isn't making a lot more income from tickets). It might be interesting to know how many thousands of its 50 yard line seats at their home stadium Memphis gives away for all its home games.

Under the city's ordinance, the only way a Legion Field "squatter" could be forced to move from their prime seat would be if confronted by a ticket holder designating those exact seats. Otherwise they took their "promotional (free?) tickets" or general admission ticket and sat in the midfield prime location. Can that be done at any other school's home stadium in America?

That was one of the reasons I hoped UAB would get to play in the MPF or its OCS where it could make all the rules for ticket sales for seating.

You have the most circumlocutious way of making points. Couldn't you have said, if UAB made football seating tiered, as opposed to allowing general admission, they could have made more money from tickets? There, just did it in one sentence.

Yes I agree. He is overly verbose in the worst way. He can't make a post that is less than 3 paragraphs..

It took us forever to get him to use paragraphs.

My point is that UAB can't LEGALLY make ANY rules, tiered or otherwise, for the sale of those 5,000 50 yard line seats covered by those SCs. Those seats are covered by legal contracts the city agreed to decades ago that run into perpetuity (forever) as long as Legion Field is used for any football games. The contract allows the tickets to be sold to other fans only in the week before the individual games if still available.

If UAB season tickets cost $200 each, then 5,000 50 yard line seats were potentially worth $1,000,000 every season at face value - that UAB had virtually no chance of LEGALLY getting. Could that have helped UAB's "bottom line" from 1996 to 2014 ($19 million)?

God, I can't wait till we have an OCS so I never hear about those seat licenses again.

What makes you think that would stop him.

So, how about that four game series between UAB and Auburn.

The stadium certificates even back in the day you had to purchase tickets way early by Feb 1 or so or the school or rights holder(concerts) could "LEGALLY" sale them. My uncle an Auburn fan had some for the Iron bowl.

Further UAB has SOLD under 4,000 season tickets within the 70K legion field I seriously doubt under 100 who exercise their rights, if any even still do. Hard to even imagine any harm to UAB very very limited premium program at all. Hell UAB in the past would have loved to sell those 5,000 season tickets to certificate holders or anybody with cash.

Yes!! We wanted to get out of Legion Field and be rid of its shortcomings. Now Dr Ray Watts has gotten UAB out of Legion Field but in a way that does not make us happy about it. But we are out of Legion Field. As the old saying goes, "Be wary of what you ask for as you may just get it".

According to the Park Board letter I circulated at a UAB radio broadcast from Valley Ave., the SC contract requires the schools to hold these 5000+ tickets until a week before each game. Whether they abide by the legal rules is, of course, up to the school. Since AU and UA fans were now going to their campus for home games, there is probably less reason to be concerned about the risk of legality being questioned.

Back then, both AU and UA sent out ticket order forms in the prior winter and if one was a "season ricket holder" one got the same seats each year unless more money could be offered. Bama tickets prior to 1980 were $5 and then $8 with no premium charged until the 80s.

We will never know if ticket sales in those most desirable locations would have been greater than for the lesser sections, but it is my opinion that UAB lost out on a lot of money by not having the chance to find out. Just like with hiring Fisher instead of Callaway - we will never KNOW that we would have done better with Fisher, but how much worse could we have done?
